For God so Loved the World, he gave us a Brand New Porsche Museum…

Mar 12 2009

First, Louis Hamilton becomes THE KING OF THE FRIKKIN WORLD by bagging the Formula One World Championships, then George Bush clasps his wife’s hand tight and shuffles off the presidential podium (Prozac ain’t gonna help you where you’re going, mate)

…and now there’s a newly-built Porsche Museum in Stuttgart!

Yep!

Now, let’s pretend the recession isn’t whipping its insatiable belly round the world and instead concentrate on this rather marvellously-valid excuse for a building.

A museum. Brand new. For Porsches!

An uber-posh commemorative farm. For Porsches!

A place where people are welcome to go ‘Ooooh’, ‘Aaaah’ and ‘OH. MY. GOD’ without sounding like porn stars.

A place where grown men can burst out crying and not look out of place.

A place where you can bring your own wheelbarrow to wheel around your jaw and tongue when said anatomical parts drop to the floor in complete and utter astonishment.

A place where every visitor is assigned an automatic drool mopper.

Does My Porsche Look Big in This…

Open since January 31st this year, the Porsche museum boasts around 80 cars (some of them rare) plus engines, prototypes and memorabilia to boot (‘xcuse the pun).

The exhibition’s split into two main areas – pre 1948 and post 1948; then it’s stitched through with 3 themes – ‘Porsche Idea’, ‘Product History’ and ‘Thematic Islands’.  An elevated ramp at the entrance allows visitors to get a sweeping view of the whole collection before deciding which area they want to go to.

Included amongst the collection of heavenly chunks of glory is the 928 model Tom Cruise drove in the film, ‘Risky Business’ – the 917 beauty Steve McQueen drove in the race flick, ‘Le Mans’ – and the piers de resistance (albeit a tad morbidly so), the 550 Spyder James Dean was behind when he was involved in the 1955 crash that unfortunately claimed his life.

Amongst the prototypes, you can lock eyes with the late-1980’s Panamericana and the award-winning early-90’s model (called the Boxster).

The building itself looks magnificent, let alone what’s in it. It’ll probably be a double treat for any Porsche lovers who like architecture as well. The building’s got a bit of a spaceship feel to it, don’t you think – like it’s itching to take flight.

Hats off to the architects. (or rather, ‘hard’ hats!)

The museum’s doors are open to the public from Tuesday to Sunday – 9am to 6pm. Entry tickets are a steal at 8 Euros per person (4 Euros concs) and kids under 14 years get in for free (if they visit with an adult).

Enjoy!
