By Tom on Friday, September 7, 2018

It’s common knowledge that owners of a Porsche 996, Boxter 987 or a 3.6 / very early 3.8 997 seem to suffer from IMS issues. Horror stories of engine failures and pricey repair bills putting a hole in your finances. But, fear not, there is information on how you can spot IMS’ bearings failure symptoms early on. So, pay careful attention, and you can reduce your worry when it comes to this issue that plagues so many Porsche owners across the globe. Our tips can help Porsche owners like you!

Which Porsche Models can an IMS Bearing Failure Happen To?

Boxters, Caymans and 911s from MY1999 to MY2008 are all at risk of IMS Bearing Failure with the exception of Turbo, GT2 and GT3 Models. The types of bearing have changed over this period in time – to confuse things more, so some of these suffered more than other bearings.

Stats suggest that the versions used for models between 2000 + 2005 are most susceptible. After 2005 the chances of a failure occurring on a Boxter or Cayman were much lower – due to a new, stronger bearing being implemented.

How To Spot Symptoms of Failure Before it is Too Late

A simple and reliable check can be made each time that you change the oil & filter. If you find metallic parts in the oil filter or, used oil, it has quite literally come from the balls within the bearing. If you find bits of black plastic then it may have come from the IMS Bearing seal. Both are signs that the IMS Bearing is starting to fail. At this point, you need to get your car in for a full inspection & repair, if determined to be necessary. So if you have a Porsche which is more vulnerable to IMS failure, maybe it would benefit you to have your oil checked more often.
