Porsche Boxster Plastic Rear Window. “Cold Crack”

By design911 on Thursday, December 18, 2008

” I’ve recently become the (proud) owner of a 1998 Boxster. Within 2 weeks, and despite performing the “boxster chop” my rear screen has cracked”  (motoring forum)

If this hasn’t happened to your Boxster it will soon!.  We get about 2 – 3 enquires on this subject every week, more in the winter.

Porsche produced the original Boxster with a plastic rear screen, consequently the limitations for use are quite high because of “cold crack” and scratching problems, in 2003 Porsche upgraded the Boxster to a glass rear screen, however they changed the pattern at the same time making it impossible to upgrade the old cars with the new hood. Design 911 now offer a replacement plastic rear screen sheet which you can take to a trimmer and have fitted to your original hood. The cost of the plastic screen is £66.50, it should cost you about £350.00 to have the screen replaced at the trimmer.

If the rear screen has been scratched beyond repair with age, cleaning & UV Damage and has become opaque or cracked, a replacement rear screen is more cost effective than a complete soft top.

The next best thing is to replace your complete hood with a Glass window upgrade hood for this early car with a heated rear window that fits to the existing hood frame and requires no modifications to install. The cost of the hood is £565.00 plus the labor to fit it. The hood is produced in exactly the same way as the new style Porsche hood only using the patterns for the old style Boxster frame, an electrical cable is supplied to plug into the rear window demister socket so that the existing switch on the dashboard can be used to demist the rear screen.

If you’re looking to buy an early Boxster please bear theses cost in mind.
