It\u2019s the sort of workshop you tend to hear about through owners rather than adverts \u2014 usually after asking who built a particular car, or why it feels different on the road. Spend a bit of time there and it becomes obvious that nothing is rushed. Cars don\u2019t move through just to hit numbers. Some stay for weeks, others for months, and that usually means decisions are being made that don\u2019t have obvious or easy answers.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"789\" data-end=\"1119\">MLR is a family-run Porsche specialist based in the UK, but the cars leaving the workshop don\u2019t stay local for long. Europe, the United States, Singapore \u2014 they turn up all over the place. That doesn\u2019t happen by accident. It happens when owners trust the people doing the work and are happy to hand over control for the long term.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1189\">Porsche isn\u2019t one of several brands MLR works on. It\u2019s the only one.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1121\" data-end=\"1189\"><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13765\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DSC09515.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1513\" height=\"1210\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1191\" data-end=\"1229\">A Background Built Around the Cars<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1231\" data-end=\"1655\">MLR didn\u2019t start with a neatly defined business plan. It grew out of time spent around Porsches from an early age \u2014 weekends at shows, time in workshops, track days, and the unglamorous jobs that go with learning how cars actually work. That kind of background leaves a mark. You learn quickly what matters and what doesn\u2019t, and you develop a sense for how these cars are meant to feel rather than how they\u2019re meant to look.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1988\">From the outset, the decision was made to focus purely on Porsche. Not because other marques lack appeal, but because Porsche offers enough depth on its own. Air-cooled and water-cooled, road cars and track cars, entry-level models and high-end variants \u2014 there\u2019s more than enough variety if you\u2019re prepared to learn them properly.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1657\" data-end=\"1988\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-30-at-19.14.54.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"1990\" data-end=\"2016\">Day-to-Day Work at MLR<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2018\" data-end=\"2234\">On the surface, MLR looks like a busy Porsche service workshop. Cars come in daily for maintenance, diagnostics, suspension work, brake upgrades and routine servicing. That work keeps the place moving and always has.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2236\" data-end=\"2461\">What isn\u2019t immediately obvious is how much of the specialist work is handled in-house. Engines are built on site. Gearboxes are rebuilt there too. Fabrication, interior work, bodywork and paint all happen under the same roof.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2463\" data-end=\"2763\">That setup didn\u2019t happen overnight. Earlier on, more work was outsourced, as it is at many specialists. Over time, it became clear that relying on outside suppliers often introduced delays or inconsistent standards. Bringing more processes in-house wasn\u2019t about scale or growth. It was about control.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"2765\" data-end=\"2800\">Custom Builds Without the Noise<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2802\" data-end=\"2978\">MLR\u2019s custom builds are what most people notice first, but they aren\u2019t built to chase trends or online attention. There\u2019s very little here that exists purely for visual impact.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2980\" data-end=\"3319\">One build that often comes up in conversation is a heavily reworked 987 Cayman. It pulls components from several Porsche models, including a 997 GT3-inspired front end, substantial brake upgrades and a fully built 3.7-litre engine using lightweight internals. Inside, parts are chosen for how they fit and function rather than for novelty.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3428\">The result feels cohesive rather than experimental. Everything looks and drives as though it belongs there.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3321\" data-end=\"3428\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13766\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DSC09570-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1508\" height=\"1206\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"3430\" data-end=\"3461\">Why the 996 Keeps Coming Up<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"3463\" data-end=\"3694\">The 996-generation 911 is a platform MLR returns to regularly, and not because it\u2019s fashionable. It\u2019s practical. It\u2019s lighter than what followed, simpler in key areas, and still modern enough to be used without constant compromise.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3696\" data-end=\"3864\">There\u2019s also less pressure around the 996. Owners are more willing to make changes and actually drive the cars once they\u2019re finished. That changes how a build develops.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"3866\" data-end=\"4170\">Most 996 projects at MLR start stripped back to the shell. Cars are acid dipped, e-coated and seam welded before being painted inside and out. Engines and gearboxes are rebuilt in-house. Capacity increases are common, but reliability remains the priority. The goal isn\u2019t headline numbers. It\u2019s usability.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4172\" data-end=\"4302\">The finished cars aren\u2019t subtle, but they don\u2019t feel forced either. They make sense on the road, which is ultimately what matters.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4172\" data-end=\"4302\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13767\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-30-at-22.36.08.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1600\" height=\"1200\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4304\" data-end=\"4349\">Different Approaches for Different Owners<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"4351\" data-end=\"4437\">Rather than pushing a single formula, MLR works around a few broad build philosophies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4439\" data-end=\"4559\">ST-style builds are aimed at long-distance usability, balancing lightweight construction with sensible interior choices.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4561\" data-end=\"4704\">Club Sport builds are more focused. Roll cages, bucket seats and fewer concessions to comfort. They\u2019re honest cars, built with a clear purpose.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4706\" data-end=\"4966\">Carrera RS-style builds go further still. These often start life as four-wheel-drive cars before being converted to rear-wheel drive, paired with RS-inspired suspension and cooling upgrades. In many ways, they represent the cars Porsche never officially built.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"4706\" data-end=\"4966\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-13768\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/WhatsApp-Image-2026-01-30-at-17.58.48.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1465\" height=\"927\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"4968\" data-end=\"5005\">Parts, Availability and Design911<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5007\" data-end=\"5160\">Parts availability plays a bigger role in build quality than many people realise. Delays slow projects down, but worse than that, they force compromises.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5162\" data-end=\"5434\">MLR works closely with <strong data-start=\"5185\" data-end=\"5226\"><span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Design911<\/span><\/span><\/strong>, a specialist Porsche parts supplier known for holding stock that isn\u2019t always available through main dealers. That includes OEM components as well as performance parts used across both servicing and builds.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5436\" data-end=\"5597\">Fast access to the correct parts reduces downtime and helps keep projects moving as planned. In a workshop building cars to this level, that reliability matters.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"5599\" data-end=\"5650\">Air-Cooled and Water-Cooled, Without the Debate<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"5652\" data-end=\"5780\">MLR works on both air-cooled and water-cooled Porsches, including 964 and 993-based builds. There\u2019s no strong stance either way.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5782\" data-end=\"5991\">Air-cooled cars have obvious appeal, but they also bring higher entry costs and more expensive maintenance. Water-cooled cars, particularly the 996, offer greater flexibility and are often easier to live with.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5993\" data-end=\"6075\">Most of the time, the decision comes down to how the owner intends to use the car.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"5993\" data-end=\"6075\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-13769\" src=\"https:\/\/www.design911.co.uk\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/DSC09507.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1514\" height=\"1211\" \/><\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6077\" data-end=\"6101\">Cars That Get Driven<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6103\" data-end=\"6199\">One of the clearer indicators of build quality is mileage. MLR-built cars tend to accumulate it.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"6201\" data-end=\"6455\">Some remain in the UK. Others are exported. In many cases, MLR continues to look after the cars long after delivery, travelling overseas to carry out maintenance and updates. That ongoing involvement says a lot about how the cars are expected to be used.<\/p>\n<h3 data-start=\"6457\" data-end=\"6474\">Looking Ahead<\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"6476\" data-end=\"6709\">MLR is currently planning a move to a larger, purpose-designed facility. The aim isn\u2019t to change what they do, but to support it properly. The cars leaving the workshop have evolved over the years.
