\u201cWhen I bought the 968, it was totally standard,\u201d says Anil. \u201cI think that\u2019s what I wanted to get. A pure car that hadn\u2019t been messed around with.\u201d<\/p>\n

Driving in London played a part in the decision.<\/p>\n

\u201cDriving in London can be a bit tedious on the clutch pedal,\u201d he says. \u201cSo I decided, if I\u2019m going to find a 968, then I will go into the world of Tiptronic.\u201d<\/p>\n

He knows what some people will say: that a Tiptronic is not a \u201cproper\u201d Porsche experience. His answer is simple: try one.<\/p>\n

Anil points out that the Tiptronic in a 968 does not behave like many modern automatic gearboxes. It gives the driver more control than people might expect, holding gears until told otherwise. It is not constantly stepping in to protect you or make decisions on your behalf.<\/p>\n

\u201cYou are in total control,\u201d he says. \u201cWhen you change gear, it will do it and it will keep you in that gear until you tell it to change.\u201d<\/p>\n

For Anil, that makes it part of the fun. And in a world where so many high-performance cars now use paddle-shift gearboxes, the old argument that enjoyment only comes from a manual does not feel quite so simple.<\/p>\n

Subtle Changes With Personality<\/h2>\n

Although the car started life totally standard, Anil has made a few visual and mechanical changes over the years.<\/p>\n

The original 16-inch wheels were replaced with 18-inch rims, partly because, as he puts it, he still has a \u201clittle bit of boy racer\u201d in him. He likes the lip on the wheels and the touch of chrome showing.<\/p>\n

He also added a lower front lip spoiler, which he feels changed the front of the car completely.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s given it a little bit more of an aggressive look,\u201d he says. \u201cIt actually finishes off the bodywork at the front quite nicely.\u201d<\/p>\n

A Car Passed Down Through Memories<\/h2>\n

Anil\u2019s son, Jai, works for McLaren after studying mechanical engineering. One day, Jai called to say there was a cars and coffee meet at McLaren. They had asked people to bring cars with a backstory.<\/p>\n

Until then, Jai had never driven the 968 by himself. Anil decided to trust him with it.<\/p>\n

What he did not realise was that the event included a competition. Each car had its story displayed, and the CEO of McLaren came out to judge them.<\/p>\n

Jai wrote about his earliest memories being in the back seat of the 968. He remembered Anil using it as a daily driver when he was growing up. He wrote that when Anil had once considered selling the car, he told him how special it was to him, and Anil promised never to sell it.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat kid in the back seat dreamed one day of driving this car,\u201d Jai wrote. \u201cAnd now it is reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Jai won the competition.<\/p>\n

That is the sort of story you cannot create with a finance agreement or a spec sheet. It happens slowly, over years. School runs, weekend drives, music in the cabin, little upgrades, conversations, and the shape of the bonnet viewed from behind the wheel.<\/p>\n

For Anil, that is what keeps the love of the car going.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen I look out behind that steering wheel and I see the shape of the bonnet and the wings over the side, there is nothing else like it,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

One day, the car will pass to Jai. And when it does, it will not just be a Porsche 968. It will be the car he grew up in, the car he dreamed of driving, and the car his father chose to keep.<\/p>\n
