The Porsche 928, a model often cited as one of the most original, notorious and strangely classic exterior designs ever created by Porsche in the 18 years the model ran, was conceived by Ernst Fuhrmann firstly in 1971 as a new fuel-efficient, luxury Porsche model; this was after brief flirts with other design ideas for models to succeed the 911.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Fuhrmann’s goal with the Porsche 928 was first to replace the flagship 911 model, which Fuhrmann believed was reaching its end in terms of competitive sports car models, but also to compete with the very prevalent oil crisis of the 70s – something that Ferdinand Porsche was also concerned with at the time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The 928 zoomed into the <\/span>consumer <\/span><\/i>market in 1978 after orders to start production by Ferdinand Porsche, mostly receiving initial plaudit – shown by the fact the model won European Car of that year – as a rear-wheel, full-alloy M28 engine powered vehicle, that would not have looked out of place in the loosely lucid plot of a fantastical space-based Sci-Fi film.<\/span><\/p>\n

So why did it largely fail when released?<\/span><\/p>\n

The model almost immediately acquired a strong, but small, cult following due to its already cited external design, but also because of its sophisticated interior, which included a cooling system, radiator and power steering among other complex components. However, the success of the model was short-lived, as the majority of the Porsche aimed market far preferred the simplicity and more objectively timeless design of the Porsche 911, compared to the perhaps more grandiose configuration and aesthetic of the Porsche 928.<\/span><\/p>\n

On top of all this, Porsche was also an Independent car manufacturer at the time of the model’s release, and this, coupled with the fact that they had only opened their doors 28 years earlier and that the car did not sell well at all, is very telling of why the Porsche 928 was unsurprisingly discontinued after the 1995 version of the model. It was then left to gather dust in the brain of the late 20th-century consumer (in contrast, it now collects far less dust in the hands of modern-day admirers, which there are now many of).<\/span><\/p>\n

Although the car certainly had backtracks when released, the 928 is undoubtedly still among the most infamous, iconic and charming car designs in existence from Porsche.
