Parts For 914 (1970-1976)

About 914 (1970-1976)

The Porsche 914, or VW-Porsche 914, stands as a collaborative venture between Volkswagen and Porsche, spanning from 1969 to 1976. Exclusively available as a targa-topped two-seat roadster, it boasted either a flat-4 or flat-six engine.

Originally, the plan was to market the vehicle with a flat four-cylinder engine under the Volkswagen brand and with a flat six-cylinder engine as a Porsche. However, during development, Porsche recognized the potential risks of having Volkswagen and Porsche models sharing the same body, particularly in the American market. Consequently, Porsche convinced Volkswagen to allow both versions to be sold under the Porsche brand in North America.

Volkswagen versions initially featured the fuel-injected 1.7ltr VW Type 4 flat-four engine, generating 80bhp (60kW; 81PS). Meanwhile, Porsche's 914/6 variant boasted the 2.0ltr air-cooled Type 901/3 flat-six engine from the 1967–1969 911T model, producing 110bhp (82kW; 112PS).

All engines were situated amidships in front of a version of the 1969 911's "901" gearbox, tailored for a mid-engined sports car. Karmann handled the chassis production, either completing Volkswagen assembly in-house or delivering versions to Porsche for final assembly.

In 1973, the 914/6 was succeeded by a variant powered by a new 100bhp (75 kW; 101PS) 2.0ltr, fuel-injected version of Volkswagen's Type 4 engine. For the 1974 model year, the 1.7ltr engine was replaced by an 85bhp (63 kW; 86PS) 1.8 ltr, and American units received the new Bosch L-Jetronic fuel injection system to aid emissions control.
