Airbag Sensor for Porsche 964 1989 Onwards

The Porsche 964 was the first model in the 911 series that had airbags for the driver and passenger. For the 964 from the model year 1989 onwards, airbags were fitted as standard in the USA and Canada with the executive board deciding “safety comes as standard at Porsche”. The airbag system includes a highly precise sensor on each side of the vehicle, which is installed underneath the luggage compartment on a longitudinal beam.

The sensor system is able to make a clear distinction between all normal driving situations and an emergency situation involving a serious collision. After the spare part stock for this analogue sensor system was used up close to 29 years after it was put into series production, Porsche went about developing a new solution.

This new solution was developed in close collaboration with the experts in vehicle safety in Weissach. the technology installed in the newly manufactured sensors is ultra-modern and consists of a micromechanical acceleration sensor which recreates the triggering characteristics of the original system. The current system is tailored exactly to the 964 model, which premiered some 30 years ago.

The new system is supplied in a look resembling the original, together with the wiring harness to connect it to the central casing. Here the term “plug and play” really comes into focus for the 30-year old 964 model. Rather simply in just a few steps, the new sensor can be positioned just as the original was.

Precise instructions are also available for the finer points of the installation. The new system looks practically identical to the new one, and the screw connection of the sensor housing to the luggage compartment floor features an asymmetrical hole pattern, just like before. In addition. the sensor housing also features an arrow for installation in the driving direction. This means that it is impossible to install the sensor the wrong way round.
