Some Porsche stories are about horsepower, lap times or rare specifications.
Anil’s story is different.
His Porsche 968 is not treated like a museum piece. It is not a car that has spent its life hidden away, only appearing on the occasional dry weekend. For Anil, the 968 has been something far more personal than that. It has been a daily driver, a long-term project, a source of pride, and eventually, a car that became part of his family’s story.
When he first bought the car, it was exactly what he had been looking for: clean, standard and unmodified.
“When I bought the 968, it was totally standard,” says Anil. “I think that’s what I wanted to get. A pure car that hadn’t been messed around with.”
That was 20 years ago this August.
Over those two decades, the car has changed, but not in a way that loses what made it special in the first place. Anil has kept the spirit of the car intact while gradually improving, protecting and personalising it. It is still very much a Porsche 968, just one that now carries 20 years of ownership, decisions, memories and small personal touches.
Buying a Standard Porsche 968
The Porsche 968 has always had a slightly different place in Porsche history.
It was the final evolution of Porsche’s front-engined, transaxle sports car line. With its long bonnet, balanced layout and unmistakable 1990s shape, it has become one of those cars that enthusiasts increasingly appreciate with time.
For Anil, the appeal was in finding one that had not been heavily modified.
A clean, standard car with full service history gave him the right base. From there, the aim was not to turn it into something completely different. It was to preserve it, use it and slowly improve the areas that mattered to him.
That is something many modern-classic Porsche owners will understand. You want the car to look its best, drive properly and feel special, but you do not necessarily want to erase its original character.
For owners keeping these cars on the road, Design911 stocks a wide range of Porsche 968 parts, covering maintenance, restoration and upgrade items for the 1992–1995 model range.

Pristine, But Not Parked
One of the biggest challenges with owning a car like a 968 is deciding how much to use it.
Anil wanted to keep his car pristine, but he also wanted to enjoy it. That meant accepting the reality of wear and tear.
“You are going to get wear and tear on the car,” he says. “I wanted to keep the car pristine, but I wanted to use it every day because I enjoyed using it every day. What’s the point in getting such a nice car and it sitting in the garage?”
That probably sums up the best kind of Porsche ownership.
Yes, these cars deserve to be cared for. Yes, they are becoming more collectable. But they were built to be driven. A 968 feels at its best when it is being used, not when it is tucked away and treated like something too precious to enjoy.
Over the years, Anil has taken that balanced approach. The car has had bodywork attention when needed, and around six years ago he made the decision to have a full body respray. Not back to bare metal, but enough to bring the car back to the standard he wanted.
He also had the car Teflon coated and the front end wrapped to protect it from the stone chips that come with real-world driving.
It is a practical approach: make the car look as good as possible, then protect it so it can continue being used.
Keeping the Interior Original
Inside, Anil has kept the 968 largely sympathetic to how it should be.
The leather has been renovated, the carpets have been cleaned, and he says he may eventually replace the carpets to freshen the cabin up further. Again, it is not about changing the character of the car. It is about preserving the feeling that made him want it in the first place.
Interior condition makes a huge difference on a modern classic. Seats, carpets, mats and trim are the things you see and touch every time you drive. They also tell the story of how a car has been used.
For Porsche owners looking to protect or refresh their cabin, Design911 offers made-to-order Porsche 968 mats and wider Porsche mats and carpets options to help preserve the interior while keeping the car usable.
Anil has also added one very personal touch inside: the sound system.
“I’ve gone a little bit crazy with the sound system,” he says. “Kept it sympathetic inside the car, but I have filled up the boot with an enormous subwoofer. You can’t see it, but it’s there and it keeps me happy.”
That is exactly what makes owner cars interesting. Not every change has to be about performance. Sometimes it is simply about making the car more enjoyable for the person who actually drives it.
Defending the 968 Tiptronic
One of the most interesting parts of Anil’s story is his defence of the Tiptronic gearbox.
For many Porsche enthusiasts, the manual gearbox is treated as the default choice. Anil understands that view, but his car is a Tiptronic, and he has no regrets.
Driving in London played a part in the decision.
“Driving in London can be a bit tedious on the clutch pedal,” he says. “So I decided, if I’m going to find a 968, then I will go into the world of Tiptronic.”
He knows what some people will say: that a Tiptronic is not a “proper” Porsche experience. His answer is simple: try one.
Anil points out that the Tiptronic in a 968 does not behave like many modern automatic gearboxes. It gives the driver more control than people might expect, holding gears until told otherwise. It is not constantly stepping in to protect you or make decisions on your behalf.
“You are in total control,” he says. “When you change gear, it will do it and it will keep you in that gear until you tell it to change.”
For Anil, that makes it part of the fun. And in a world where so many high-performance cars now use paddle-shift gearboxes, the old argument that enjoyment only comes from a manual does not feel quite so simple.
Subtle Changes With Personality
Although the car started life totally standard, Anil has made a few visual and mechanical changes over the years.
The original 16-inch wheels were replaced with 18-inch rims, partly because, as he puts it, he still has a “little bit of boy racer” in him. He likes the lip on the wheels and the touch of chrome showing.
He also added a lower front lip spoiler, which he feels changed the front of the car completely.
“It’s given it a little bit more of an aggressive look,” he says. “It actually finishes off the bodywork at the front quite nicely.”
For owners looking to make subtle exterior updates, Design911 carries Porsche exterior styling parts, including front spoilers and bumper upgrades.
The other major change was the rear exhaust box.
Anil wanted a slightly more aggressive sound without changing the whole system. That is where Design911 came in. Through RPM, he found the right rear box from Design911 and was impressed with the quality when it arrived.
“Trying to find aftermarket parts for your car can be quite challenging,” he says. “It’s not only finding aftermarket parts, but finding good quality aftermarket parts.”
For 968 owners looking at exhaust maintenance or upgrades, Design911 offers Porsche 968 standard exhaust systems as well as performance options such as the Cargraphic sport rear silencer for Porsche 968.
The result is exactly what Anil wanted: a little more presence, a slightly more aggressive note, but still in keeping with the car.

Why the Support Network Matters
Owning any classic or modern-classic Porsche is about more than the car itself.
As Anil explains, the support network is vital. That means parts suppliers like Design911, trusted specialists, forums, WhatsApp groups and other owners who understand the cars.
“Owning a Porsche or owning any kind of classic car also comes down to your support network,” he says.
That support network is one of the reasons he has kept the car for so long. At times, Anil admits he thought about selling the 968 and buying something else. A Bentley. A Lamborghini. Something different.
But he stayed with the Porsche.
Part of that is because the 968 is still a reasonably priced car to own and enjoy compared with many alternatives. But the bigger reason is emotional. His wife and children know how passionate he is about Porsche and about this particular car.
And then came the moment that changed how he saw it completely.
A Car Passed Down Through Memories
Anil’s son, Jai, works for McLaren after studying mechanical engineering. One day, Jai called to say there was a cars and coffee meet at McLaren. They had asked people to bring cars with a backstory.
Until then, Jai had never driven the 968 by himself. Anil decided to trust him with it.
What he did not realise was that the event included a competition. Each car had its story displayed, and the CEO of McLaren came out to judge them.
Jai wrote about his earliest memories being in the back seat of the 968. He remembered Anil using it as a daily driver when he was growing up. He wrote that when Anil had once considered selling the car, he told him how special it was to him, and Anil promised never to sell it.
“That kid in the back seat dreamed one day of driving this car,” Jai wrote. “And now it is reality.”
Jai won the competition.
That is the sort of story you cannot create with a finance agreement or a spec sheet. It happens slowly, over years. School runs, weekend drives, music in the cabin, little upgrades, conversations, and the shape of the bonnet viewed from behind the wheel.
For Anil, that is what keeps the love of the car going.
“When I look out behind that steering wheel and I see the shape of the bonnet and the wings over the side, there is nothing else like it,” he says.
One day, the car will pass to Jai. And when it does, it will not just be a Porsche 968. It will be the car he grew up in, the car he dreamed of driving, and the car his father chose to keep.

More Than Just Parts
At Design911, we are lucky to support Porsche owners at every stage of ownership.
Sometimes that means helping a specialist source parts for a customer car. Sometimes it means supplying a replacement exhaust, interior items, styling upgrades or maintenance parts for an owner keeping their pride and joy on the road.
But stories like Anil’s are a reminder that these cars are rarely just machines.
A Porsche can become part of everyday life. It can carry memories, family history and personal decisions. It can be standard, modified, restored, daily driven, protected, upgraded and loved all at the same time.
Anil’s 968 is all of those things.
And after 20 years of ownership, it still puts a smile on his face.
