Porsche People: From Garage Dreams to Porsche Perfection: The Story of Rico Customs

Rico Customs, founded by Rik, has grown from a humble garage for simple projects to a renowned name in Porsche customisation. With an unwavering commitment to quality and a deep love of Porsches, Rik’s quest for the perfect car went from a dream to reality, born out of necessity and passion.

“I started when I was searching for the perfect 911 for myself,” he recalls. Having transitioned from a love of BMWs to a deep-seated passion for Porsches, he had difficulty finding a car that met his standards. So, he decided to create it.

The journey started with a modest budget and a Porsche 911 SC, a choice driven by the model’s potential. Intrigued by the concept of backdating (modifying newer models to mimic the aesthetic of classic Porsches), he started a project that transformed not just his car but his entire career.

Building a Legacy

The first project was a learning experience. “I read about backdating cars and was very interested, especially because you get the best look of the F model with more modern techniques.”

This fusion of classic design and modern performance became Rico Customs’ mission.

His workshop is a testament to meticulous craftsmanship, transforming each Porsche by taking it apart and building it in a new image.

“Depending on the customer’s wishes, we either leave the body as is or dip it and do the full coating. We ship all the parts out to get them powder-coated, ensuring every detail is perfect.”

The Process

Customisation at Rico Customs is more than just a job; it’s an art form. The process starts with a full disassembly, followed by sending parts out for refinishing and coating when the process is finished.

Body modifications are performed with precision, such as sunroof deletion or changing the front lock to fit the F model’s aesthetic. When bodywork is complete, the car is reassembled.

Engine upgrades are also available, following a client’s instructions and regional regulations.  The success of the first build led to an increasing number of projects, each more complex and refined than the last. “We’ve built so far 15, and we’re now running numbers up to 22,” he shares, a statement about the shop’s growing reputation.

A Network of Excellence

Rico Customs’ journey to becoming the best Porsche customisation shop was significantly bolstered by its relationship with industry leaders like Design911.

“We’ve always admired the precision and quality of Design911’s work,” Rik explains. “Their extensive range of parts and accessories has been invaluable in our restorations and customisations.”

The relationship has allowed Rico Customs to source high-quality components that meet the highest standards of excellence. “Whether it’s sourcing rare parts for a classic 911 or finding the latest performance parts, Design911 remains a reliable partner.”

Passion for Driving

At the heart of Rico Customs is a love for driving. Rik himself is an avid driver, often taking his custom builds on extensive road trips across Europe.

For him, the joy of driving these masterpieces is paramount. “If you don’t enjoy driving these cars, then you don’t belong here,” he asserts. It’s a sentiment echoed by his clients, who are not just collectors but passionate drivers.

“I have a guy in Denmark who bought an RSR and ships it everywhere to drive it on different tracks. He really drives it fast, and I love that.”

Pursuing Perfection

Every project at Rico Customs is a step towards the ever-elusive perfect 911. “Each car we build is better than the last,” he says with pride. Whether it’s finding new suppliers or experimenting with different engineering techniques, the quest to perfect the Porsche is never-ending.

“I think they’re all perfect in their own way. But the cool thing is, they keep getting better.”

Rik’s personal favorites include the short wheelbase models and the modernised G models, each delivering a unique driving experience. “The F model is the most beautiful 911 for me, but driving-wise, the more modern cars with better grip and brakes are a different kind of fun.”

Looking To The Future

While Rico Customs primarily focuses on period-correct restorations and modifications, the future presents even more excitement. “I’d love to do a 356 or a 914 GT. It has to be period-correct and done well, but I’m open to new projects.”

The passion for Porsche is not just a business but a lifestyle for Rik. The meticulous attention to detail, the dedication to driving pleasure, and the continuous pursuit of perfection make Rico Customs a unique gem in the world of classic Porsche restoration and customisation.
