From Scarface to Petrolhead: Karan’s Story

The Porsche community is as diverse as the cars themselves and this week’s ‘Porsche People’ person is Karan Malik, a Millennial for whom the air-cooled vs water-cooled debate is already over. He comes at the marque from a different angle entirely.

‘My first automotive memory is being sat behind the wheel of a car, in my dad’s lap, even before I could walk. As a Millennial. My motoring fantasies were fueled by cinema” – spot the common denominator here – “the 928 is Scarface, the 356 in Top Gun, and the 954 Turbo in Bad Boys.”

With the flame well and truly lit, and with 30 years of life in the tank, Karan knew that the next step was to own his own Stuttgart superstar. “My first two were underdogs”, he explains. “Front-engine V8s – a Panamera and a 928. They were followed by back-to-back 911s: a 997 and a 911.”

Here’s an idea…

“A fellow petrolhead from my village suggested that we might hook up to share our passion, and little did we know that it would be the start of a community – a brethren, a club – specifically, the Redbourn Porsche Owners’ Club. We organise monthly meets, tours around the UK, continental trips – we even have our own merchandise.

“With new beginnings it was time to get some new wheels. I longed for the middle ground that offered the analogue feel of my old 997 and the power and capabilities of the 911 that I was currently rolling. After months of searching, I found her: a 2011 Porsche 911 Carrera GTS with a factory Aero kit and a six-speed manual box.

Double bubble.

“It had all the go-faster features of a track car aligned with the comforts of a GT. I knew instantly that this was a keeper. My only mods has been the addition of a short-shifter, supplied by Design911 and installed by AMS Porsche. It’s customised with Stealth PPF over the entire paintwork and gloss PPF on the Aero kit parts.
