In the early 90s, Grant Larson presented a design that would come to help bridge the financial divide prevalent within the Porsche community – this car was the Porsche 986 Boxster. 

Released by Porsche in 1996, the Porsche Boxster served as a sports car that retained the core Porsche features that was more “wallet-friendly” than its counterpart the 911. 

Surprisingly, despite efforts in the past, the Boxster was the first Porsche to successfully provide a middle ground between the 911 range and more affordable coupé sports ranges.

This success came when the consumer market realised that the 986 was amongst the most serious competitors in its sports car price bracket, and – even with the ample competition from BMW and Mercedes at the time – the Boxster saw an immediate following soon after its unveiling.

 

 

The Boxster 986 has been cited as taking design inspiration from the 550 Spyder, but also the 356 Cabriolet and Speedster – much like its nearly identical cousin the Porsche 996.

Throughout the four generations, it has been around, the Boxster has had only minor design revitalisations – speaking to the high standard of the original design.

The Porsche Boxster range continues to be widely appreciated by the Porsche community, with many either already owning, or wanting to own, the original Boxster model.
