Porsche 993 Targa Interior Upgrades to Make Driving Even Sweeter

Porsche’s 993 Targa is arguably one of the highest pinnacles in Porsche motoring history. Production of the model began in 1996 and it was the first to have the electrical sliding roof in laminated glass, instead of the removable soft top.

But this isn’t why the 993 is one of the most expensive Porsches you can buy, nor the sole reason it’s one of the best classic car investments you could make. The whole 993 range were fantastic cars and the last of the air cooled engines. Many believe the 993 is the prettiest of all Porsches too. That, combined with the fact that less than 5,000 of them were ever produced, puts the Porsche Targa 993 in a class of its own. If you are looking to buy a Porsche 993, the Targa is a great choice that will appreciate in value faster than other models.

It’s not just about the looks either. The 993 Targa is both refined and practical, so you could use it every day if you were up to footing the large fuel costs. She’s a dainty but darting joy to drive and you’ll find her brakes are often far better than you may expect from a similarly aged classic.

Porsche 993 investment

Even a 993 Cabriolet that needs a little work is going to set you back around £30,000. Thanks to the rarity of the Targa, you’ll see that figure climb to £40,000 or even £60,000.

When it comes to preserving your investment, or simply remaining true to the beauty of the 993’s design, a Porsche 993 with fuchs wheels is an excellent choice. It’ll ensure the authentic look of the air-cooled era of the Zuffenhausen brand is maintained along with excellent road grip when the rear end comes into play at faster speeds.

Upgrading the Porsche 993 Targa interior

Inside the cabin of the 993 Targa it can feel a little compact. That, and given that the car is well over 20 years old, you may be looking to make a few adjustments to show you’re 993 a little TLC.

The seats and steering wheel, the most used part of the cabin, are the obvious places to start. Rather than opting for the full factory interior restoration pack, a little modification in this area can improve comfort and driving experience. It’s a little more fun too.

Replacing the factory steering wheel with the MOMO MOD.07 steering wheel delivers enhanced reach and responsive handling.

As a necessity, steering for sportscars is excellent and the Porsche 993 Targa is certainly no different. However, upgrading to the Momo Mod.07 deep dish steering wheel will add a rally driving feel to any journey. The non-stitch cover in suede or leather improves both comfort and durability of the finish, ensuring good value from the switch.

The deep dish design moves the steering slightly closer to you for better leverage and faster correction. The three spoke design gives the interior or the Porsche 993 Targa a sportier feel too. The top yellow marker provides a quick visual reference of wheel positioning. You can fit the steering wheel yourself without too much trouble, but we’d recommend getting a professional to do the work considering it’s such a key part of the driving experience.

Improving comfort in the 993 Targa

One of the easiest ways to upgrade the interior of the 993 Targa from refined and comfortable to luxury class racing is with a set of Recaro Pole Position Race Seats. The integrated headrest and glass fibre seat shell dramatically improve safety for driver and front passenger while also delivering far better lumbar support than the factory original seats the Targa hit the market with.

Again, we’d recommend having the seats fitted by a Porsche Classic or Porsche Centre to ensure the safety and comfort of this highly regarded 993. That said, if you’re handy with classic car restorations, fitting the Recaros can be done easily as long as you have the right equipment.

Given that the 993 Targa is such a great investment, as well as an enjoyable sportscar to drive – even if the unusual driving position and hit-or-miss ergonomics take a little getting used to – upgrading both the steering wheel and seats should improve comfort along with value.
