SUVs, Porsche’s coming of age generation – the Porsche Cayenne and Porsche Macan

Porsche SUVs – a subject of contention ever since their baptism at the beginning of the new millennium. Fervent 911 servants, to this day, see them as desecration on the name of Porsche; how could an outlandishly lavish German sports car producer taint their trademark with such a “benign” instalment? Well, as they say, money makes the world go round, and, at the start of the noughties, it certainly was not growing on trees at the Porsche HQ.

Prior to 2002, the Porsche Boxster had been the best selling Porsche model in the five years that preceded the awakening of the SUV range. Porsche believed that a more economically viable sports car would be enough to rid them of their financial woes; while this was true to an extent, the Boxster still didn’t do enough to completely clinch Porsche out of economic disarray.

Let’s not get it twisted though, Porsche were, of course, not going to release an SUV solely to spark more controversy around their brand and gamble squandering even more money – especially after the semi-failure of the Porsche 996 of the late 90s

Porsche needed a revamp. Something so safe that it would be near impossible for them to sink any deeper into financial crisis, and, as Dom Toretto would say, nothing is more loyal and reliable than family.

Early market research indicated that an SUV would be a successful endeavour for Porsche; it was projected to draw in a multitude of new customers who had previously been isolated by coupé sports models that required children to sit in the boot on school runs (something that would probably not have gone down too well with significant others) – and reel in the families the Cayenne did.

A car, branded with the symbolically luxurious Porsche crest, that blended the power of a sports model that went from 0-60 mph in 7 seconds with the faculty to keep your kids nodding off in the back, all while retaining the capacity to fit in your beach gear, luggage, groceries and still have room for dessert. These are among the various reasons why so many family bearers promptly fell into awe when they saw the Cayenne, and later in 2014 the more affordable Macan, and how SUV models were able to bail Porsche out big time.

It took little to no time for the Porsche Cayenne to become the companies’ best selling model, even overtaking the 911 with relative ease; much to the gawk and chagrin of traditionally orientated Porsche fanatics.

Since then Porsche SUVs have become notorious inside not just in the World of family cars, but within the automotive community in general.

Capacity, pace and power are all adjectives you’ll likely overhear in conversations about the Macan and Cayenne, however, Porsche SUV critics aren’t critics for the sake (or at least in this case..).

KW DLC Air Suspension

The KW DLC (Dynamic Level Control) allows visually appealing lowering for many cars and SUVs with standard air suspension. 

The KW DLC is an electronic lowering module, which connects quick and easy to the standard wiring via an adapter plug. It enables a vehicle-specific lowering of up to 50 mm. 

Of course, the electronic lowering module is compatible with different air suspension systems and driver assistance programs of your vehicle. No matter if you have Audi “adaptive air suspension”, Mercedes-Benz AIRMATIC, Mercedes-Benz ABC and others – all functions remain completely and do not have to be deactivated for the use of KW DLC. 

Via the vehicle specific plug connection, the control unit will be connected to the standard wiring. Thanks to a switch at the control unit, you or your installation partner can also adjust the lowering in fixed steps – in this case, you do not need the KW DLC App.

MD561 & MD562 Twin Hybrid Turbochargers are game-changing.

Turbo benefits from Hybrid Turbos own design billet aluminium compressor wheel. Not only does billet offer significantly improved strength and durability over the original cast aluminium wheels if used correctly the material can be used to make the wheel lighter.

A lighter compressor wheel will spool quicker allowing for a better response from the turbocharger meaning a reduction in turbo lag. The billet aluminium compressor wheels are up to 20% lighter than the originally used cast items.

MD561 & MD562 Stage 1 Twin Hybrid Turbos feature:

  • Hybrid Turbos designed 6 Blade Billet Compressor Wheel providing optimal airflow
  • Compressor cover modified to suit new larger compressor wheel
  • Turbine housing modified to accommodate new larger turbine wheel
  • Turbine wheel modified to reduce the backpressure

MD561 & MD562 Twin Hybrid Turbochargers fit:

Porsche Cayenne (955) Turbo 4.5 litre 450 bhp, between years 2003-2006, OEM number 94812301656.

These hybrids are a direct replacement for IHI VVQ1 & VVQ2.

These Hybrid Turbos must be fitted as a pair.
