Tailpipe Tales: Upgrading your 993 Exhaust.

The Porsche 993 was marketed on its looks, its status as the last air-cooled incarnation of the 911, and all-wheel drive. The exhaust isn’t front of mind. But Design911 can help you with an upgrade that will help complete a best-of-everything car. We’ve 10 lined up to show you. Let’s go!

Go deeper with DesignTek.

Created to deliver a better throttle response, and enabling improved engine aspiration, DesignTek created this exhaust to give a deeper engine note than the original Porsche standard exhaust. Every DesignTek exhaust system is made from 14-16 gauge extra heavy duty T304 stainless steel to eliminate splitting, cracking and annoying resonance.

If you’re driving the 1994-97 Porsche 993, but not the Turbo or GT2, like to make a statement with every pedal press, and insist on adding quality to the original build, then this muffler/silencer back box is worth considering. Alternatively, if you’re rolling the non-turbo 1995-98 Porsche 993 then Dansk offer this stainless steel exhaust system that includes a full tail pipe set, 100 cell sport catalyst converters and sports silencers.

Great header!

Proud owners of the Porsche 993 Carrera, the 1994-1998 vintage, will love Fabspeed’s RSR Header Muffler Kit which was built for today’s driver. Compatible with both the 3.6L and 3.8L engines, this track-ready but road-legal full exhaust system drops an aggressive exhaust note while adding horsepower, torque, and improving throttle response while dropping kerbside weight by 43 pounds to improve handling and acceleration.

Created from a super-tough grade of stainless steel, installing this unit is a simple bolt-on operation, requiring no cutting or welding, and covered by Fabspeed’s life-means-life warranty.

Go nuts.

If you’re considering an upgrade – and why read this if you’re not – then don’t forget to improve your fastenings at the same time. This exhaust head stud kit and heat exchanger fitting kit is compatible with every 993 (and many other Porsche models besides) and, because they’re made from titanium, they won’t succumb to rust and corrosion in the same way as traditional steel studs and nuts.

Should you ever need to access your car’s exhaust system again, you’ll be glad you made the switch. Similarly, not an exhaust but an upgrade in terms of securing what’s there, this rear exhaust mounting kit fits the Porsche 993 C2,C4, C2S and C4S/RS. It’s all here: restraining straps, sealing rings, stainless steel clamp, and every bolt, nut and washer.

Lovely Cat kit.

Drivers of the same models of Porsche 993, specifically the 1994-98 cohort, will likely be using Bischoff heat exchangers. This exhaust catalytic converter is fitted with compatible flanges and the housing is made from grade 409 stainless steel to provide protection and enable the cat to be built into the exhaust system. If you have Gillett heat exchangers instead, this is built to the same high spec.

If you’re driving the 1994-96 version of the Carrera, then Fabspeed offer this shiny header upgrade to squeeze more horsepower from your 993 – assuming that you have Bischoff style flanges. Once again, only the highest quality T304L stainless steel is used and will provide the optimal airflow for your engine while trimming a little from the car’s body weight to add power and torque, whatever the revs. If you have the 1996-98 Carrera, then you’ll likely have Gillet style flanges and this is the version you need.

Sound advice.

The beauty of the engine note of a Porsche 993 – whatever the year – is most definitely in the ear of the beholder and it pays to think this through. Sport cats, like this Dansk original catalytic converter set, certainly boost the decibels. Consequently, drivers of the Porsche 993/ 4S 3.6 or 3.8 that have fitted sport silencers may find their car is suddenly a little on the raucous side. So, just use a single sport exhaust component if you don’t want to wake the neighbours every time you fire up your car. These stainless steel, 100-cell cats are compatible with both the Bischoff and Gillet exhaust systems.

Take the bypass.

Another way of achieving your sonic ambitions is to fit these DesignTek sports catalytic bypass pipes. Complete with adapters to fit Bischoff or Gillett heat exchangers and simple to install, they will give your 1994-98 Porsche 993 C2, C4, C2S, C4S or RS a sportier throatier note than other than packages and mufflers. The lighter weight saves 27 lbs., too, while boosting your throttle response. What’s not to like?

Our final option of the 10 is this set of exhaust tail pipes. These B-design, clamp-on polished stainless steel pipes are pre-cut to follow the bumper shape of your Porsche 993 C2 and C4, 3.6 and 3.8 L models. A Dansk Original product, they are available to ship today with our standard 12 month warranty.
