Air Conditioning Compressor
The OE Match air conditioning
compressor is designed to restore
correct refrigerant circulation and cooling performance when the original
compressor has become worn, noisy or failed.
Fits:
- Porsche 928S4 5.0L 1987-92
- Porsche 928GT 5.0L 1989-91

What Does the Air Conditioning Compressor Do?
The compressor is at the heart of the Porsche 928 air conditioning system. Driven by the engine, it compresses and circulates refrigerant through the A/C circuit.
The compressed refrigerant travels through the condenser, expansion system and evaporator, allowing heat to be removed from the cabin and providing cooled, dehumidified air.
Without a correctly functioning compressor, the air conditioning system cannot circulate refrigerant effectively or provide consistent cabin cooling.
Why Do Air Conditioning Compressors Fail?
A/C compressors contain internal moving components, bearings, seals and a clutch assembly that can deteriorate with age and use.
Common causes of failure include:
- Internal bearing wear
- Compressor clutch failure
- Worn shaft seals
- Refrigerant or lubricant loss
- Internal contamination
- Lack of lubrication
- Corrosion following long periods of inactivity
- General age-related wear
These issues are particularly relevant on classic vehicles such as the Porsche 928, where the original air conditioning components may have been in service for several decades.
When Should It Be Replaced?
Consider replacing the compressor if:
Air conditioning no longer blows cold Cooling performance has become noticeably weaker Compressor clutch fails to engage Grinding, rattling or squealing noises are present Refrigerant or compressor oil is leaking Compressor has seized Internal compressor failure has contaminated the A/C systemPoor cooling, clutch problems, compressor noise and refrigerant or oil leakage are among the main reasons for replacement.
Checks Before Installation
Before fitting a replacement compressor, the complete A/C system should be checked for:
Refrigerant leaks Contamination from the old compressor Correct refrigerant and compressor oil Condition of the drive belt Condenser condition Receiver-drier condition Expansion valve operation A/C hoses and sealsIf the original compressor has suffered an internal mechanical failure, contamination should be removed from the system before the replacement compressor is installed.
