The company traces its roots back to the 1930s, when Czech-German automotive engineer Ferdinand Porsche, alongside Adolf Rosenberger and Anton Piëch, established Porsche. Rosenberger played a pivotal role in the formation of the German automotive manufacturer Auto Union, a precursor to Audi. Meanwhile, Piëch, who was Ferdinand Porsche's son-in-law, also contributed to the company's inception. Initially, Porsche was commissioned by the German government to design a car for the masses, a project that eventually led to the creation of the iconic Volkswagen Beetle. His son Ferry Porsche embarked on creating his own automobile, culminating in the production of the Porsche 356.
In 2009, Porsche and Volkswagen forged an agreement to integrate their operations, forming an "integrated working group." This collaboration paved the way for a merger of their car manufacturing endeavors. By 2015, Porsche SE, the holding company stemming from the original Porsche entity, wielded considerable influence within the Volkswagen Group, which boasted Audi and Lamborghini among its subsidiaries.
