Camshaft chain sprocket
This original Porsche timing chain idler sprocket forms part of the engine camshaft timing drive system. It guides the timing chain around the chain wheel support assembly, helping maintain the correct chain path and reliable operation of the valve timing mechanism.

Fits:
Porsche 911 1965 - 1989

Diagram Ref No 6

The sprocket is fitted within the engine timing chain housing and works with the chain wheel support, timing chain and tensioner assembly.

What This Part Does / Functions
  • Guides the timing chain through the correct operating path
  • Supports smooth movement of the camshaft timing chain
  • Works with the chain wheel support and timing chain tensioner
  • Helps maintain correct chain engagement
  • Reduces unwanted chain movement when correctly installed
  • Supports reliable operation of the camshaft timing drive
  • Replaces worn, chipped or damaged sprocket teeth
  • Maintains the original Porsche engine timing arrangement.

Why Replace This Part?
The camshaft timing chain sprocket is exposed to continuous mechanical loading, engine vibration, oil and repeated timing chain movement. Over time, the sprocket teeth may become worn, damaged or unevenly shaped. A worn sprocket can accelerate timing chain wear, contribute to abnormal chain noise and reduce the efficiency of the timing chain drive system.

Replacing a worn component with a Genuine Porsche timing chain sprocket helps restore the correct chain engagement and factory timing drive arrangement.

When to Replace This Part
  • During timing chain replacement.
  • When sprocket teeth show visible wear or damage.
  • During engine rebuilding or restoration.
  • When replacing the timing chain tensioner or chain wheel support.
  • If the sprocket has become damaged or excessively worn.
  • During camshaft timing system overhaul.
  • When restoring the engine with Genuine Porsche components.

Where It Fits on the Car
The sprocket is fitted inside the engine camshaft timing chain housing, mounted on the relevant chain wheel support. It forms part of the left-hand and right-hand camshaft timing chain drive assemblies.

The timing chain runs over the sprocket as part of the system that transfers crankshaft rotation to the camshafts.
