A faulty sensor can cause incorrect low-coolant warnings or may fail to report a genuine drop in coolant level. Replacing a defective sensor restores an important part of the cooling system's monitoring and warning function.

What Does the Coolant Bottle Level Sensor Do?

The coolant level sensor is fitted to the coolant expansion tank, also commonly referred to as the coolant bottle or reservoir.

Its job is to monitor whether the coolant is at the required level. If the level falls below the specified point, the sensor communicates this to the vehicle's electronics so a warning can be displayed to the driver.

A correctly functioning coolant level sensor helps:

  • Monitor coolant level within the expansion tank
  • Alert the driver when coolant becomes too low
  • Provide early warning of coolant loss
  • Reduce the risk of driving with insufficient coolant
  • Support correct operation of the cooling system warning functions

The sensor does not measure engine temperature and does not control coolant flow. Its purpose is specifically to monitor coolant level.

Why Is Coolant Level Monitoring Important?

The engine cooling system relies on having the correct quantity of coolant circulating through the engine, radiators and associated components.

A falling coolant level can indicate a leak or another cooling system problem. If coolant loss continues unnoticed, the cooling system may become unable to control engine temperature effectively.

The coolant level sensor therefore provides an important early warning, allowing the cooling system to be inspected before a low coolant condition develops into a more serious problem.

Why Do Coolant Level Sensors Fail?

Coolant level sensors operate in a demanding environment and can deteriorate with age and repeated heating and cooling cycles.

Common causes of failure include:

  • Age-related electrical deterioration
  • Repeated temperature cycling
  • Internal sensor failure
  • Coolant contamination or deposits
  • Corrosion at electrical connections
  • Damaged wiring or connectors
  • Damage during expansion tank removal or replacement

A problem with the expansion tank, wiring or electrical connector can produce similar symptoms, so these components should also be inspected before replacing the sensor.

When Should the Coolant Level Sensor Be Replaced?

Replacement should be considered if:

  • A low coolant warning remains on despite the coolant being at the correct level
  • Low coolant warnings appear intermittently without an actual loss of coolant
  • The sensor fails diagnostic testing
  • The sensor or electrical connection is physically damaged
  • Corrosion is present around the connection
  • The sensor has been damaged during cooling system maintenance
  • The coolant expansion tank is being replaced and the existing sensor is no longer serviceable

If the vehicle displays a low coolant warning, the actual coolant level should always be checked first. A warning should not automatically be assumed to be caused by a faulty sensor.

Important Cooling System Checks

If the coolant level is genuinely low, the cause should be investigated rather than simply topping up the expansion tank.

Potential coolant loss can occur from components such as hoses, expansion tanks, radiators, water pumps, seals and other cooling system connections.

Replacing the level sensor is appropriate when the sensor itself has been identified as faulty.
