Early Porsche 964 models were equipped with a twin-belt drive arrangement for the cooling fan and ancillary components. Porsche later introduced the improved single-belt drive system, simplifying maintenance while improving belt alignment, reducing the number of service items and enhancing overall reliability. This upgraded crankshaft pulley is a key component in that conversion.

The crankshaft pulley is mounted directly to the front of the crankshaft and transfers engine rotation to the cooling fan, alternator and air conditioning compressor via the drive belt. Accurate machining and correct alignment are essential, as even slight pulley wear or distortion can lead to premature belt wear, belt noise and reduced charging or cooling efficiency.

This upgraded pulley provides excellent fitment and durability, making it the ideal replacement during engine rebuilds, front-end servicing or when converting to the later Porsche single-belt configuration.

Why Do Crankshaft Pulleys Fail?

Although manufactured from durable metal, crankshaft pulleys are exposed to constant engine vibration, high rotational loads and repeated thermal cycling throughout their service life. Over time they can suffer from:

When Should the Crankshaft Pulley Be Replaced?
