Diagram ref. 5

The lower wishbone is a key part of the Cayenne's front suspension, connecting the wheel carrier to the chassis/subframe and controlling wheel movement as the suspension travels. It helps maintain correct suspension geometry during cornering, braking and driving over uneven road surfaces.

What Does the Front Lower Wishbone Do?

The lower wishbone, also known as a control arm or track control arm, locates the front wheel relative to the vehicle's chassis while allowing the suspension to move vertically.

It helps control wheel alignment and suspension geometry while transferring braking, cornering and road forces through the suspension. Correct operation is important for stable steering, consistent tyre contact and predictable handling.

Why Does It Fail?

The control arm itself is a substantial component, but its bushes and associated joints are subjected to continual movement and considerable loads.

Wear can result from:

Deteriorated suspension bushes Wear in associated joints High mileage Potholes and heavy road impacts Corrosion Accident or kerb damage Repeated heavy suspension loads Age-related deterioration

As wear increases, unwanted movement can develop within the suspension, affecting steering accuracy and wheel alignment.

When Should It Be Replaced?

Typical symptoms of a worn front control arm or its associated components can include:

Knocking or clunking over bumps Vague or imprecise steering Vehicle pulling to one side Steering vibration Uneven or accelerated tyre wear Poor wheel alignment Excessive suspension movement Visible damage to the arm or bushes

Similar symptoms can be caused by other steering and suspension components, so the complete front suspension should be inspected before replacement.

Checks During Replacement

When replacing the lower wishbone, also inspect:

Opposite front lower wishbone Suspension bushes Ball joints Upper control arms Anti-roll bar links and bushes Steering track rods Wheel bearings Dampers and suspension mounts Mounting bolts and fasteners

A four-wheel alignment should be checked after control arm replacement to ensure the suspension geometry is correctly set.

NOTE: This wishbone is not compatible with GTS or Turbo models. These models require a different part number.
