Timing Chain, Centre Upper.
The IWIS Timing Chain, Centre Upper is a replacement internal engine timing component for compatible Porsche applications. Located within the centre upper section of the timing system, the chain transfers rotational drive between associated timing components and helps maintain the precise mechanical synchronisation required for correct engine operation.

Fits:
  • Porsche 958 Cayenne S V6 3.0L Hybrid (380Hp) 2010-17
  • Porsche 970.1 Panamera S Hybrid V6 3.0L 2011-13
  • Porsche 970.2 Panamera S E-Hybrid V6 3.0L (416Hp) 2014-16

Diagram Ref No 1

Timing chains operate continuously whenever the engine is running and are subjected to repeated mechanical loads. Although designed for long service life, wear can develop in the chain, guides, tensioners and sprockets over time.

A worn or elongated timing chain can develop excessive slack, create abnormal mechanical noise and affect timing accuracy. If deterioration becomes severe enough for the chain to jump or fail, significant internal engine damage may result.

What This Product Does:
The centre upper timing chain forms part of the engine's mechanical timing drive.

Its primary purpose is to transmit rotational movement between associated timing-system components while maintaining their required mechanical relationship.

This helps support:

  • Accurate operation of the engine timing system
  • Correct synchronisation of associated rotating components
  • Reliable transfer of mechanical drive
  • Stable engine operation
  • Consistent timing throughout the engine-speed range
  • Reliable operation of associated timing components

Correct chain tension and engagement with the sprockets are essential for maintaining accurate mechanical timing.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Possible signs of timing-chain or associated timing-system deterioration include:

  • Metallic rattling from the timing area
  • Clattering or chain noise
  • Rattle during cold start
  • Excessive chain slack
  • Timing-chain elongation
  • Abnormal noise at idle
  • Noise that changes with engine speed
  • Rough or irregular engine operation
  • Difficult startingUnstable idle
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Engine warning light
  • Timing-related diagnostic fault codes
  • Crankshaft/camshaft correlation faults where applicable
  • Visible chain wear during inspection
  • Worn or damaged chain guides
  • Abnormal sprocket wear
  • Metal or plastic debris in the engine oil or filter

These symptoms can also be caused by other components, so accurate diagnosis is essential before replacement.

Why Replacement Matters:
The centre upper timing chain is an important internal engine component.

Replacing a confirmed worn, elongated or damaged IWIS Centre Upper Timing Chain can help:

  • Restore reliable timing-system operation
  • Maintain accurate mechanical synchronisation
  • Reduce excessive chain slack
  • Reduce abnormal timing-chain noise
  • Restore reliable chain engagement
  • Protect associated guides and sprockets
  • Reduce the risk of timing deviation
  • Reduce the risk of the chain jumping
  • Support smooth and consistent engine operation
  • Protect expensive internal engine components

Ignoring confirmed timing-chain deterioration can allow wear to progress and potentially lead to a considerably more expensive engine repair.
