Also known as an upstream, pre-cat or O2 sensor, the lambda sensor provides essential feedback to the engine control unit (ECU). By measuring the amount of oxygen remaining in the exhaust, the sensor enables the ECU to determine whether the engine is operating with a rich or lean air-fuel mixture and make the necessary fuel-delivery corrections.

Because this sensor operates upstream of the catalytic converter, it plays a particularly important role in closed-loop fuel control. Accurate readings contribute to efficient combustion, responsive engine performance, fuel economy and emissions control.

Continuous exposure to high exhaust temperatures, vibration and combustion deposits can cause lambda sensors to deteriorate over time. A worn sensor may become slow to respond, provide inaccurate readings or fail completely.
