Turbochargers compress the intake air before it enters the engine. Compression increases air pressure but also raises its temperature. The intercooler acts as a heat exchanger, removing excess heat from the compressed charge air before it reaches the engine.

Lowering charge-air temperature increases air density and helps the engine-management system maintain consistent performance, efficient combustion and controlled intake temperatures. This becomes particularly important during sustained acceleration, high engine loads and warm ambient conditions.

The intercooler also forms part of the pressurised intake circuit. Cracks, damaged connections, deteriorated seals or physical damage can allow boost pressure to escape, potentially resulting in reduced performance and underboost faults.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • An intercooler needs to perform two key functions effectively: remove heat from the compressed intake charge and maintain the integrity of the pressurised boost system.
  • If an intercooler develops a leak, some of the compressed air supplied by the turbocharger can escape before reaching the engine. This may cause reduced boost pressure, poor acceleration and a noticeable loss of engine performance.
  • The ECU may detect a difference between requested and actual boost pressure and record an underboost fault. Depending on the severity of the problem, the engine-management system may also limit performance to protect the engine and turbocharging system.
