The guide tube provides a protected and correctly routed path for the bonnet release cable as it runs between the interior release mechanism and the front bonnet latch. By supporting the cable along its route, it helps maintain smooth cable movement and reduces unnecessary rubbing, bending and contact with surrounding bodywork.

With a length of 1750mm, this OE Match component is designed as a replacement for an ageing, damaged, corroded or missing original guide tube and is particularly suitable for restoration or bonnet release system refurbishment.

What This Product Does:
The bonnet release system uses a mechanical cable to transfer movement from the interior release handle to the front bonnet latch.

The guide tube supports and directs this cable through the vehicle, allowing the inner release cable to move along a controlled path when the bonnet release handle is operated.

Its functions include:

  • Guiding the bonnet release cable along the correct route
  • Protecting the cable from contact with surrounding bodywork
  • Helping reduce friction and unwanted cable movement
  • Preventing excessive bending or kinking of the release cable
  • Supporting smooth operation of the bonnet release mechanism
  • Helping protect the cable from premature wear
  • Maintaining the correct factory-style installation

Although the guide tube does not release the bonnet itself, it is an important supporting part of the mechanical release system.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
After decades of use, an original guide tube may become damaged, distorted or deteriorated. Possible symptoms include:

  • Stiff or heavy bonnet release operation
  • Release handle requiring excessive force
  • Bonnet latch not releasing consistently
  • Cable movement feeling rough or notchy
  • Release cable binding inside its route
  • Visible cracking, splitting or deterioration of the guide tube
  • Kinks or crushed sections in the tube
  • Corrosion or contamination within the cable route
  • Excessive movement of the release cable
  • Cable rubbing against surrounding bodywork
  • Premature fraying or wear of the bonnet release cable
  • Difficulty routing a replacement bonnet cable correctly
  • Missing sections of the original cable guide

It is important to inspect the release cable and bonnet latch at the same time, as a stiff bonnet release can also be caused by a worn cable, poor adjustment or a sticking latch.

Why Replacement Matters:

  • The front bonnet release is a simple mechanical system, but dependable operation is particularly important because failure can make access to the luggage compartment and bonnet latch difficult.
  • A damaged or collapsed guide tube can create additional friction around the release cable, making the bonnet release handle harder to operate. Increased resistance also places additional load on the cable, handle and latch mechanism and can accelerate cable wear.
  • If the release cable is allowed to rub against surrounding metalwork because its guide is damaged or missing, the cable can eventually fray, bind or fail.
  • Replacing a deteriorated guide tube helps restore the intended cable routing, promotes smoother bonnet release operation and protects the release cable from unnecessary wear. It is also a worthwhile replacement when carrying out a complete bonnet release cable renewal or restoration.
