Ignition Coil Kit

Maintain the performance and reliability of your Porsche 997.1 turbo or GT2 with this premium Ignition Coil Kit, containing the correct combination of ignition coils.

Fits:

  • Porsche 997 MK1 TURBO 2007-09
  • Porsche 997 MK1 GT2 2007-09

Beru is the original equipment manufacturer (OEM) for Porsche ignition coils, making this kit an excellent solution for servicing the legendary Mezger engine while retaining the correct factory specification where it matters most.

Designed specifically for the 2006-2009 Porsche 997.1 turbo and GT2, this kit restores strong, consistent spark energy across all six cylinders, helping to eliminate ignition misfires, improve throttle response, enhance fuel efficiency and maintain the outstanding performance expected from Porsche's twin-turbo flat-six.

Why Does the 997.1 turbo Use Two Different Ignition Coils?

Unlike most Porsche flat-six engines, the 997.1 turbo and GT2 (2006-2009 Mezger engine) uses two different ignition coil part numbers, not because the cylinders require different ignition performance, but due to a physical packaging constraint around cylinder 6.

The original factory specification is:

  • 5 × 99760210405 (or earlier superseded part numbers)
  • 1 × 99760210406 (cylinder 6 only)

Why Is Cylinder 6 Different?

Cylinder 6 is positioned extremely close to the Variable Turbine Geometry (VTG) turbocharger actuator and the surrounding turbocharger hardware. There simply isn't sufficient clearance for the standard, slightly taller ignition coil fitted to the other five cylinders.

To overcome this, Porsche specifies a shorter-profile ignition coil for cylinder 6.

Importantly, the Genuine Porsche cylinder 6 coil delivers exactly the same ignition energy and electrical characteristics as the other five coils. The only difference is the external housing, which has been specially designed to provide the clearance required around the VTG turbocharger components.

This is why every factory Porsche ignition coil kit for the 997.1 Turbo is supplied with five standard coils and one shorter-profile cylinder 6 coil.

This kit follows that same factory configuration by supplying:

  • 5 x Beru ignition coils (OEM supplier to Porsche)
  • 1 x Genuine Porsche shorter-profile ignition coil for cylinder 6

This ensures correct fitment, reliable clearance around the turbocharger hardware and factory-level ignition performance.

Why Do Ignition Coils Fail?

Ignition coils operate in one of the hottest environments on the vehicle, continually exposed to engine heat, vibration and thousands of ignition cycles every minute. Over time, the insulation inside the coil can deteriorate while the outer housing may develop small cracks.

As the coils age, spark output becomes weaker or inconsistent, leading to incomplete combustion and noticeable reductions in engine performance.

When Should They Be Replaced?

Ignition coils should always be inspected whenever the spark plugs are replaced and should be renewed if any signs of deterioration are present.

Common symptoms include:

  • Engine misfires
  • Rough idle
  • Hesitation under acceleration
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Check Engine Light (CEL)
  • Fault codes including P0300-P0306
  • Poor fuel economy
  • Visible cracks in the coil housing
  • During scheduled spark plug replacement

Because access to the ignition coils on the 997.1 Turbo requires significantly more labour than on naturally aspirated models, replacing the complete set at the same time is considered the most cost-effective long-term solution.

Key Features

  • 5 x Beru OEM ignition coils
  • 1 x Genuine Porsche cylinder 6 ignition coil
  • Factory-correct configuration for 997.1 turbocharged engines
  • Correct shorter-profile coil for VTG turbo clearance
  • Restores reliable spark energy
  • Helps eliminate ignition misfires
  • Improves starting, throttle response and engine efficiency
  • Ideal when replacing spark plugs
  • Precision fit and long service life

Porsche 997.1 Turbo Ignition System Components

The Mezger engine remains one of Porsche's most respected powerplants, renowned for its strength, durability and motorsport heritage. To maintain its performance, the ignition system must consistently deliver a powerful spark under the demanding conditions created by turbocharged combustion.

Replacing ageing ignition coils helps ensure efficient combustion, smoother engine operation and dependable performance while reducing the likelihood of intermittent misfires that often develop as the original coils age.

This mixed Beru and Genuine Porsche kit mirrors the factory arrangement, combining OEM quality with the correct cylinder-specific design required for the unique packaging around cylinder 6.

Benefits of Replacing All Six Ignition Coils

  • Restores maximum ignition performance
  • Improves engine smoothness and throttle response
  • Reduces the risk of future ignition failures
  • Maintains factory spark energy across all cylinders
  • Ensures correct clearance around the VTG turbo actuator
  • Complements new spark plug installation
  • Reduces future labour costs by replacing all coils at once
