What Does the PDK Distance & Speed Sensor Do?
The Porsche PDK transmission relies on internal sensors to monitor the position and movement of its shift mechanisms.
These signals allow the PDK control system to determine which gears are selected and accurately control gear engagement. If the sensor produces an incorrect, intermittent or implausible signal, the transmission control unit may no longer be able to reliably determine the position of the relevant shift rod.
This can trigger fault codes, dashboard warnings or transmission failsafe/limp mode.
Common Symptoms of PDK Sensor Failure
A failing distance or speed sensor may cause:
- PDK transmission warning messages
- Transmission entering limp or failsafe mode
- Loss of normal gear selection
- Difficulty selecting particular gears Loss of reverse gear
- Intermittent transmission operation
- Vehicle becoming undrivable
- “Transm. fault Poss. no R gear…” or similar dashboard warnings
- Stored PDK transmission fault codes
These symptoms can have other causes, so correct diagnostic testing should always be carried out before replacing the sensor.
Why Replace the Sensor Instead of the Complete PDK Transmission?
An internal sensor fault does not necessarily mean that the complete PDK gearbox has mechanically failed.
Where professional diagnosis confirms that the distance/speed sensor is responsible for the fault, replacing the defective internal sensor can provide a significantly more economical repair than replacing the complete transmission.
This makes the sensor particularly valuable for Porsche specialists and transmission repairers carrying out component-level PDK repairs.

- 7DT70 7-speed PDK
Not compatible with Porsche 911 992 models, as the 992 generation does not use the 7DT45 or 7DT70 PDK transmission.
Transmission type should always be confirmed before ordering, as model designation alone does not guarantee compatibility.
Professional Installation Required
