Conrod bearings support smooth rotation of the connecting rods around the crankshaft. They provide a precision surface that carries dynamic loads, reduces friction, and helps distribute lubrication. Proper bearing fit and surface finish are essential for maintaining engine reliability, minimizing wear, and ensuring efficient power transfer from pistons to the crankshaft.
Function:
• Support rotating assembly: These bearings sit between the connecting rod and crankshaft journal, providing a low-friction surface for smooth engine operation.
• Maintain oil film: Precisely engineered to maintain correct oil film thickness under high load and RPM.
• Protect journals: Reduce metal-to-metal contact to prevent engine damage.
• Balance engine performance: Ensure consistent bearing clearance and performance across all cylinders.
Without correct big end bearings, the engine can experience precursors to knock, accelerated wear, and in extreme cases, catastrophic failure.
Conrod bearings are high-wear engine components that operate under extreme pressure and high temperature. Over time, bearings can suffer wear, scoring, clearance growth, or deformation. Worn bearings may cause:
• Knocking or rattling noises from the bottom end
• Reduced oil pressure in the big end circuit
• Accelerated crankshaft or connecting rod wear
• Engine seizure or failure if left unchecked.
Replacing bearings with an OE Match set during an overhaul, rebuild, or high-mileage service helps ensure smooth crankshaft rotation, proper oiling, and long-term engine reliability.
When to replace. Replace the big end conrod bearing set when:
• Performing a top-end or full engine rebuild
• There are indications of bearing wear, such as metal particles in the oil
• Low oil pressure or knocking noise is detected from the bottom end
• Engine has high mileage with no prior bearing refresh
• During any crankshaft or connecting rod service.
