Diagram Ref No 20
Positioned beneath the steering column behind the steering wheel, the cover conceals wiring, switchgear connections and other steering-column components while providing the correct factory-style finish around the driver's controls.
This lower cover is intended for vehicles without cruise control and is suitable for replacing an original panel that has become cracked, warped, scratched, loose or missing.
It is particularly useful during interior restoration or steering-column refurbishment, where ageing original plastic trim may have become brittle after decades of use.
What This Product Does:
The steering column cover is primarily a protective and cosmetic component.
Its functions include:
- Covering the lower steering-column assembly
- Concealing wiring and internal components
- Protecting switchgear connections from accidental contact
- Providing a clean factory-style finish
- Helping reduce rattles from loose or damaged trim
- Supporting correct alignment with the upper steering-column cover
- Keeping the driver's control area neat and complete
Although it does not affect the mechanical steering function itself, the lower cover helps protect the surrounding electrical components and maintains the original appearance of the dashboard and steering-column area.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:

Although it does not affect the mechanical steering function itself, the lower cover helps protect the surrounding electrical components and maintains the original appearance of the dashboard and steering-column area.
Why Replacement Matters:
A damaged lower steering-column cover can noticeably detract from the appearance of an otherwise well-maintained classic Porsche interior.
Broken mounting points may also allow the trim to vibrate or rattle while driving, creating unwanted noise around the steering wheel and dashboard area.
If the cover is badly damaged or missing altogether, wiring and electrical connections around the steering column may be left more exposed to dust, debris or accidental contact during use and servicing.
Replacing a worn lower cover helps restore:
- A neat factory-style appearance
- Secure steering-column trim
- Reduced rattling and vibration
- Protection for surrounding wiring and switchgear
- Correct alignment with the upper cover
- A more complete interior restoration
For restoration work, replacing brittle plastic trim also makes future removal and refitting easier because the correct mounting points can once again be used securely.
