The synchroniser ring is positioned inside the gearbox and plays an essential role in allowing smooth gear engagement. Before the selected gear engages, the synchroniser helps equalise the rotational speeds of the gear and transmission shaft, reducing the likelihood of gear clash or grinding.
This OE Match replacement is suitable for gearbox rebuilding or repair where the original synchroniser ring has become worn, glazed, scored or damaged.
What This Product Does:
During a manual gear change, the gearbox components involved are rotating at different speeds.
The synchroniser system brings these speeds together before the gear teeth fully engage.
The synchroniser ring helps:
- Match gear and shaft rotational speeds
- Allow smoother 3rd and 4th gear engagement
- Reduce gear grinding during shifts
- Reduce shock loading on transmission components
- Protect engagement teeth and synchroniser hubs
- Improve shift quality
- Provide more consistent manual gearbox operation
Without an effective synchroniser, the driver may need to apply greater force to select the gear, and the engagement teeth can begin to clash before their speeds have equalised.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Synchroniser rings are friction components and naturally wear over time through repeated gear changes.
Common symptoms of a worn 3rd or 4th gear synchroniser can include:
- Grinding when selecting 3rd gear
- Grinding when selecting 4th gear
- Difficult or reluctant gear engagement
- Notchy gear changes
- Increased effort required at the gear lever
- Gear engaging more easily when shifted slowly
- Gear clash during fast shifts
- Poor shifting when the gearbox is cold
- Difficulty downshifting into 3rd or 4th
- Improved shifting when double-declutching
- Metallic noise during gear engagement
- Visible scoring or wear on the synchroniser ring during gearbox inspection
- Rounded, damaged or worn engagement surfaces
Similar symptoms can also be caused by worn dog teeth, selector components, bearings, shift linkage or clutch problems, so the transmission should be properly diagnosed before dismantling.
Why Replacement Matters:
A worn synchroniser ring cannot effectively equalise the speeds of the gearbox components before engagement.
As wear progresses, the driver may experience increasingly difficult or noisy shifts.
Continuing to use a badly worn synchroniser can contribute to damage to:
- Gear engagement teeth
- Synchroniser hubs
- Sliding sleeves
- Dog teeth
- Selector components
- Associated gearbox parts
Replacing the worn ring during a gearbox rebuild helps restore smooth synchronisation and reduces the risk of damaging more expensive transmission components.
