Installed within the gearbox synchromesh assembly, the synchroniser ring helps match the rotational speeds of the gear and transmission shaft before engagement. This allows the selected gear to engage more smoothly and helps prevent grinding or gear clash.
This OE Match component is suitable for transmission rebuilding and repair where the original synchroniser ring has become worn, glazed, scored or otherwise damaged.
What This Product Does:
During a manual gear change, the gear and shaft involved may be rotating at different speeds.
The synchroniser system uses friction to bring those rotating components to a similar speed before the engagement teeth mesh.
The synchroniser ring helps:
- Match rotational speeds during gear selection
- Promote smooth gear engagement
- Reduce grinding and gear clash
- Reduce shock loading on transmission components
- Protect engagement teeth and synchroniser hubs
- Improve shift quality
- Maintain precise manual gearbox operation
Without effective synchronisation, the driver may need to use more force at the gear lever and the transmission can begin to grind during engagement.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Synchroniser rings are friction components and gradually wear through repeated gear changes, heat and load.
Common symptoms can include:
- Grinding during gear selection
- Difficult or reluctant gear engagement
- Notchy gear changes
- Increased effort required at the gear lever
- Gear clash during faster shifts
- Difficulty downshifting
- Gear engaging more easily when shifted slowly
- Improved engagement when double-declutching
- Metallic noise during gear selection
- Inconsistent shift quality
- Visible scoring or glazing on the synchroniser surface
- Worn or damaged engagement surfaces during gearbox inspection
These symptoms can also be caused by worn dog teeth, hubs, sliding sleeves, selector components, bearings, clutch faults or incorrect gearbox oil, so proper diagnosis is important before dismantling the transmission.
Why Replacement Matters:
A worn synchroniser ring cannot match shaft and gear speeds effectively.
As the friction surface deteriorates, gear changes may become increasingly difficult and noisy.
Continued use with a badly worn synchroniser can accelerate wear to:
- Gear engagement teeth
- Synchroniser hubs
- Sliding sleeves
- Dog teeth
- Selector forks
- Associated gearbox components
Replacing the worn ring during a transmission rebuild helps restore smooth synchronisation and can help prevent damage to more expensive gearbox parts.
