The timing chain transfers rotational drive from the crankshaft through the timing mechanism so that camshaft operation remains correctly synchronised with piston movement. This precise relationship allows the intake and exhaust valves to operate at the correct points during the engine's combustion cycle.

Timing chains are designed for extended service life, but continuous mechanical loading, friction, heat and lubrication conditions can gradually cause wear. Chain elongation, worn guides, defective tensioners or damaged sprockets can create excessive slack and affect timing accuracy.

If deterioration becomes severe enough for the chain to jump, derail or fail, incorrect valve timing and potentially serious internal engine damage can result.
