Porsche parts catalogues position these components within the outer side-body and rear-quarter structure and describe them as:

Water protection

and, in later specialist catalogues:

Drain valve / forced ventilation trim.

Their role is to help protect the body ventilation and drainage area from direct water spray, dirt and road contamination while allowing the vehicle's intended body-cavity ventilation and drainage arrangement to function correctly.

The left and right guards sit within the side-body structure close to the rear quarter and sill area, where they help reduce the amount of spray and debris entering sensitive body cavities.

Over time, the original components can become cracked, brittle, distorted, loose or lost during body repairs. A damaged or missing guard can leave the surrounding cavity more exposed to water, mud and debris and may interfere with the intended drainage or forced-ventilation arrangement.

Replacing deteriorated guards helps restore the original Porsche body protection and ventilation configuration.
