Contact Breaker Point Set

Keep your classic Porsche ignition system performing at its best with this OE Match Contact Breaker Points. Manufactured to OE specifications, these precision-engineered breaker points are designed to restore accurate ignition timing, reliable spark generation and dependable engine performance.

Fits:

  • Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
  • Porsche 356A 1955-59
  • Porsche 356B 1959-63

As one of the key service components within a traditional distributor ignition system, the contact breaker points control the opening and closing of the ignition circuit, allowing the ignition coil to generate the high-voltage spark required for combustion. Correctly adjusted breaker points are essential for smooth starting, stable idle, responsive acceleration and efficient engine operation.

Whether you're carrying out routine ignition maintenance, rebuilding a distributor or restoring a classic Porsche to its original specification, these OE Match breaker points provide factory-quality fitment, dependable operation and long service life.

What Do Contact Breaker Points Do?

Contact breaker points are responsible for switching the ignition coil on and off in precise synchronisation with engine rotation.

Their primary functions include:

  • Opening and closing the ignition circuit.
  • Triggering spark generation at the ignition coil.
  • Maintaining accurate ignition timing.
  • Supporting smooth engine idle.
  • Ensuring consistent combustion.
  • Providing reliable engine starting.
  • Working in conjunction with the distributor, condenser, ignition coil and spark plugs.

Accurate operation of the breaker points is essential for maintaining engine performance and fuel efficiency.

Why Replace Contact Breaker Points?

As mechanical ignition components, breaker points naturally wear through continual opening and closing during engine operation.

Common causes of wear include:

  • Contact surface erosion.
  • Electrical arcing. Incorrect point gap adjustment.
  • Heat-related wear.
  • Oxidation and corrosion.
  • Weak contact spring tension.
  • General age-related deterioration.
  • High mileage.

Routine replacement helps maintain accurate ignition timing and reliable engine performance.

Symptoms of Worn Contact Breaker Points

Common signs that replacement may be required include:

  • Difficult starting.
  • Engine misfires.
  • Rough or unstable idle.
  • Poor acceleration.
  • Hesitation under load.
  • Reduced fuel efficiency.
  • Loss of engine power.
  • Inconsistent ignition timing.
  • Increased exhaust emissions.

Replacing worn ignition points restores smooth running and helps protect other ignition system components from unnecessary stress.

Benefits

  • Restores reliable ignition performance.
  • Maintains accurate ignition timing.
  • Improves engine starting.
  • Supports smoother idle.
  • Enhances throttle response.
  • Helps improve fuel efficiency.
  • Reduces misfires and hesitation.
  • Excellent value replacement component.

Installation Recommendations

When replacing the contact breaker points, it is recommended to inspect or renew other ignition service components, including:

  • Distributor condenser.
  • Distributor cap.
  • Rotor arm.
  • Spark plugs.
  • Ignition leads.
  • Ignition coil.
  • Distributor shaft for wear.
  • Distributor advance mechanism.

After installation, the breaker point gap and ignition timing should be adjusted according to the manufacturer's specifications to ensure optimum engine performance.

The "rotor" head is attached to the top of the distributor shaft which is driven by a gear on the engine's camshaft and thus synchronized to it. This rotor is pressed against a carbon brush on the center terminal of the distributor cap which connects to the ignition coil either through the top and wired directly to the coil in HEI systems, or via the center terminal in points ignition systems and remotely connected to the coil.

The rotor is constructed such that the center tab is electrically connected to its outer edge so that voltage coming in to the center post travels through the carbon point to the outer edge of the rotor. As the camshaft rotates, the rotor spins and its outer edge passes each of the internal plug terminals to fire each spark plug.

About Rotor Arms / Point Sets

Rotor Arms & Contact Points Sets – Precision Ignition Components for Classic Porsche Models

Rotor arms and contact point sets are essential parts of your Porsche’s ignition system, responsible for controlling spark distribution and timing in vehicles with mechanical ignition setups. Together, they ensure the correct firing sequence, providing reliable combustion, smooth acceleration, and efficient engine performance.

At Design911, we stock a complete range of genuine and high-quality rotor arms and contact point sets for classic and early Porsche models, including 911, 912, 914, 924, and 928. Each component is designed for precision fitment, long-lasting performance, and consistent electrical delivery — maintaining your Porsche’s originality and reliability.

What Do Rotor Arms and Contact Points Do?

In traditional distributor-based ignition systems, these components work together to generate and distribute the spark required for combustion:

  • Rotor Arms: Spin inside the distributor cap, transferring the ignition coil’s high-voltage current to each spark plug terminal in turn.
  • Contact Points: Open and close the electrical circuit in sync with the engine’s rotation, controlling coil discharge and ignition timing.
  • Together: They maintain accurate spark timing for smooth running and efficient power delivery.

These components are crucial for keeping classic Porsche engines firing reliably and performing at their best.

Why Do Rotor Arms and Contact Points Fail?

Over time, heat, friction, and wear can affect the performance of these ignition parts. Common causes of failure include:

  • Contact wear or pitting from electrical arcing.
  • Carbon buildup reducing spark efficiency.
  • Rotor arm erosion or cracking from high voltage or vibration.
  • Mechanical fatigue due to mileage and age.
  • Corrosion or contamination in the distributor housing.

Symptoms of failure include hard starting, misfires, engine hesitation, or loss of power, particularly at high revs or under load.

Why Replace Worn Rotor Arms and Contact Points?

Replacing worn or damaged ignition components restores accurate spark timing and smooth engine performance. New, high-quality rotor arms and contact points improve combustion efficiency and prevent further ignition system wear.

Benefits of replacement include:

  • Reliable starting and smoother idling.
  • Improved power delivery and throttle response.
  • Reduced misfires and fuel consumption.
  • Long-term reliability with manufacturer-quality precision.

All components in our range are built using high-grade materials with precise machining and durable contact surfaces, ensuring consistent spark delivery and long-lasting performance in vintage and air-cooled Porsche engines.
