The Fabspeed Spec Boxster Competition Race Exhaust System is a lightweight, high-flow exhaust package developed specifically for 1997–1999 Porsche 986 Boxster and Boxster S track and competition applications.
Fits:
- Porsche Boxster 986 2.5L 1997-99
- Porsche Boxster 986 2.7L 1999
- Porsche Boxster S 986 3.2L 1999
Designed with maximum exhaust flow, weight reduction and performance in mind, the system replaces the restrictive factory exhaust and catalytic-converter arrangement with a much freer-flowing race configuration.
Fabspeed manufactures the system from 14–16 gauge CNC mandrel-bent T304 stainless steel, providing excellent resistance to exhaust heat, corrosion and repeated track-day thermal cycling.
The system also includes turn-down exhaust tips, designed to help direct sound toward the ground and assist with track noise-limit compliance.
Fabspeed currently publishes performance figures of approximately:
- +15 hp
- +14 lb-ft of torque
- 36 lb / 16.4 kg weight reduction
Actual performance will vary according to vehicle condition, engine specification, fuel and testing conditions.
What This Product Does:
The factory exhaust system must balance noise, emissions, refinement and performance.
For a dedicated competition car, these compromises can create unnecessary weight and exhaust restriction.
The Fabspeed Spec Boxster Competition system is designed to:
- Maximise exhaust gas flow
- Reduce backpressure
- Improve throttle response
- Increase horsepower and torque
- Reduce rear vehicle weight
- Produce a much more aggressive race exhaust note
- Remove the restrictive factory catalytic converters
- Provide a lightweight track-focused exhaust layout
- Direct exhaust sound downward through turn-down tips
- Replace the full OEM exhaust with a competition-oriented system
This system is specifically intended for race and track use, rather than normal road driving.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The factory 986 exhaust system is now several decades old on early cars and can deteriorate through heat, condensation, corrosion and vibration.
Common symptoms include:
- Rust or corrosion on exhaust pipes and silencers
- Cracked welds
- Blowing or hissing noises
- Black soot around leaking joints
- Internal muffler rattles
- Loose internal baffles
- Catalyst rattling
- Reduced engine performance
- Restricted high-RPM response
- Excessive exhaust heat
- Loose clamps or brackets
- Damaged exhaust hangers
- Dented or distorted pipework
- Exhaust fumes around the rear of the vehicle
- Poor exhaust-tip alignment
- Check Engine Light caused by catalyst-related faults
Rattling or reduced performance may also be caused by heat shields, oxygen sensors or other engine-management issues, so proper diagnosis is recommended.
Why Replacement Matters:
A deteriorated exhaust system can affect both performance and reliability.
Cracked or leaking exhaust components can allow extremely hot gases to escape near surrounding parts.
Restricted or internally damaged catalytic converters can also increase exhaust backpressure.
Continued operation with a failing exhaust can contribute to:
- Reduced engine performance
- Poor throttle response
- Excessive exhaust heat
- Unwanted noise and rattling
- Exhaust fumes escaping before the intended outlet
- Heat exposure to nearby components
- Additional stress on exhaust mounts and joints
Replacing damaged components restores secure exhaust routing and correct exhaust flow.
For a healthy standard car, the Fabspeed Competition system is primarily a race-performance and weight-reduction upgrade.

The Fabspeed Porsche 986 Boxster Primary Sport Catalytic Converters are high-flow replacement catalysts designed for 1997–1999 Porsche 986 Boxster and Boxster S models.
Fits:
- Porsche Boxster 986 2.5L 1997-99
Designed to replace the more restrictive factory catalytic converters, these performance catalysts improve exhaust-gas flow while retaining catalytic converter functionality. The result is a more performance-oriented exhaust path designed to improve throttle response, support increased power potential and enhance the naturally aspirated Porsche flat-six exhaust note.
Fabspeed uses HJS/EMITEC high-flow catalytic converter technology, with the manufacturer specifying a 200 CPSI (cells per square inch) catalyst design. Fabspeed states that these catalysts can flow approximately 90–93% of the volume of a straight pipe in many applications while continuing to provide exhaust-gas treatment.
The converters are designed as a direct bolt-on replacement for the original catalytic converters, making them suitable for use with the factory OEM-style muffler or aftermarket exhaust systems designed to accept the original Porsche catalytic converter arrangement.
What This Product Does:
Catalytic converters form part of the vehicle's exhaust system and are designed to chemically convert harmful exhaust pollutants into less harmful compounds before gases leave the tailpipe.
However, exhaust gases must pass through a catalyst substrate, which creates some resistance to flow.
The Fabspeed Primary Sport Catalytic Converters use a high-flow catalyst design intended to reduce this restriction compared with the original factory catalysts.
Potential benefits include:
- Improved exhaust flow
- Reduced exhaust restriction
- Improved throttle response
- Increased performance potential
- Reduced weight compared with the original catalysts
- Enhanced flat-six exhaust sound
- Retained catalytic converter functionality
200CPSI High-Flow Catalyst Design:
- Catalytic converter density is commonly described in cells per square inch (CPSI).
- A performance-oriented 200 CPSI catalyst provides a relatively open exhaust path while maintaining the large internal surface area required for catalytic exhaust-gas treatment.
- Fabspeed states that its HJS/EMITEC 200 CPSI catalysts can flow approximately 90–93% of a straight pipe in many applications.
- This high-flow construction is designed to provide a balance between exhaust performance and catalyst functionality.
Performance:
Fabspeed states that these Sport Catalytic Converters improve power and throttle response, but the current product listing does not publish specific numerical gains.
The manufacturer currently lists:
Horsepower: TBD
Torque: TBD
Weight: TBD
Specific horsepower, torque or weight-saving figures should therefore not be assumed.
Actual performance will depend on factors including:
- Engine condition
- Existing exhaust configuration
- Rear muffler system
- Intake modifications
- ECU calibration
- Fuel quality
- Ambient conditions
- Testing equipment
- Testing methodology
Why Upgrading Matters:
The original catalytic converters do not have to be faulty before fitting the Fabspeed Sport Catalytic Converters.
They can also be installed as a performance upgrade.
Reasons for upgrading include:
- High-flow 200 CPSI catalyst design
- HJS/EMITEC catalyst technology
- Reduced exhaust restriction
- Improved exhaust flow
- Improved throttle response
- Increased performance potential
- Enhanced flat-six exhaust note
- Reduced weight compared with factory catalysts
- Retains catalytic converter functionality
- Direct bolt-on installation
- Compatible with factory-style exhaust connections
- Designed specifically for 1997–1999 Porsche 986 models

The Fabspeed Porsche 986 Boxster Sport Headers are a performance exhaust upgrade designed to improve exhaust flow, scavenging, throttle response and flat-six sound on Porsche 986 Boxster.
Fits:
- Porsche Boxster 986 2.5L 1997-99
The headers use equal-length CNC mandrel-bent primary tubes combined with F1-style high-velocity merge collectors. This configuration is designed to improve the way exhaust gases leave each cylinder and merge into the exhaust system, reducing unnecessary restriction and supporting more efficient engine breathing.
1997–1999 Porsche 986 Boxster / Boxster S: The factory headers do not incorporate primary catalytic converters, so the Fabspeed headers for these vehicles are supplied without sport catalysts.
Fabspeed reports +8 wheel horsepower and +4 lb-ft of torque when the Sport Headers are installed with the Fabspeed Maxflo Performance Exhaust System. These are manufacturer-reported figures from a specific vehicle and are not guaranteed results for every application.
What This Product Does:
Exhaust headers collect combustion gases as they leave the engine's cylinder heads and direct them into the remainder of the exhaust system.
The design and length of the individual primary tubes influence how efficiently these exhaust pulses leave the cylinders.
The Fabspeed Sport Headers are designed to improve this process through equal-length primary tubing and high-velocity merge collectors.
Potential benefits include:
- Improved exhaust flow
- Improved exhaust scavenging
- Reduced exhaust restriction
- Improved cylinder evacuation
- Sharper throttle response
- Increased horsepower and torque potential
- Stronger high-RPM performance
- Enhanced naturally aspirated flat-six sound
1997-1999 Header Configuration:
- On 1997–1999 Porsche 986 Boxster and Boxster S models, the factory headers do not contain primary catalytic converters.
- Fabspeed therefore supplies these model-year applications without catalytic converters incorporated into the Sport Headers.
- This is an important distinction when ordering because the header configuration differs from later 986 models.
Why Upgrading Matters:
The original Porsche headers do not need to have failed before fitting the Fabspeed Sport Headers.
This product is primarily a performance and sound upgrade.
Reasons for upgrading include:
- Equal-length primary tubes
- CNC mandrel-bent construction
- F1-style high-velocity merge collectors
- Improved exhaust scavenging
- Improved exhaust flow
- Reduced exhaust restriction
- Increased performance potential
- Sharper throttle response
- Enhanced flat-six exhaust sound
