Koni Special Active front shock absorbers & top mounts kit – Porsche 986 Boxster by Koni is for Porsche Boxster 986 models from 1997–2004, including 2.5L, 2.7L and Boxster S 3.2L variants. This front kit combines Special Active dampers with top mounts for a matched suspension refresh on the front axle.

What This Product Does Front shock absorbers control vertical wheel and suspension movement, help maintain tyre contact and manage body movement during braking, cornering and acceleration. Koni Special Active dampers use Frequency Selective Damping technology to vary damping response according to road and suspension movement, while the included top mounts support correct installation at the strut-to-body mounting point.

Functions

  • Controls front suspension travel and wheel movement.
  • Helps manage nose dive, pitch and body roll.
  • Supports consistent front axle behaviour when fitted as a pair.
  • Replaces ageing front dampers and associated top mounts together.
  • Helps address wear-related knocking where top mounts are part of the cause.

Symptoms of Fault

  • Leaking oil on the damper body.
  • Excessive bouncing after bumps.
  • Nose dive under braking.
  • Knocking or creaking over uneven roads.
  • Vague steering response or tramlining.
  • Uneven tyre wear or cupping.
  • Poor body control or unsettled ride feel.
  • Harshness caused by worn mounts, bushes or incorrect spring pairing.

Why Replacement Matters

  • Front dampers are commonly replaced to restore ride control, braking stability and handling feel when original parts are worn.
  • Replacing top mounts at the same time can reduce repeat labour and address related suspension noises.
  • Koni Special Active dampers are often chosen for road cars where controlled damping and everyday compliance are both required.
  • Suspension issues can overlap across dampers, mounts, arms, bushes and alignment, so inspect the wider front suspension before fitting.
  • After suspension work, have the wheel alignment checked to support consistent handling and tyre wear.

Fits

  • Boxster 986/987/981 (1997–2016)
  • Boxster 986/987/981 (1997–2016) => Boxster 986 2.5L 1997–99

Check fitment for your specific vehicle (model, year, engine) before ordering.

FAQs

  • Should front shocks be replaced in pairs? Yes, left and right front dampers are normally replaced together for balanced axle behaviour.
  • Are new top mounts worth fitting? They are often recommended when the existing mounts are old, noisy or being disturbed during damper replacement.
  • Are these dampers adjustable? Some Koni products are adjustable; confirm the exact specification for this kit and follow the supplied fitting instructions.
  • What should be checked after fitting? Inspect related bushes and arms, then have the alignment checked once the suspension work is complete.

About Koni standard

Koni Standard Damper

At Design911, we offer Koni standard dampers for Porsche models, giving you access to one of the best-known names in suspension. Drawing on Koni’s long experience in road and motorsport applications, these shocks are designed to deliver controlled, consistent damping suitable for everyday use and enthusiastic driving, while remaining compatible with standard-style suspension setups.

Why do Koni Standard shock absorbers matter?

Koni standard dampers influence how your Porsche rides, handles and copes with day-to-day road surfaces. As original dampers age, they can lose control, leading to bouncing, instability and uneven tyre wear. Refreshing your suspension with quality Koni components helps your Porsche feel more composed, reduces unwanted movement and supports even, predictable behaviour on typical road journeys.

  • Help maintain a stable, well-controlled ride for your Porsche
  • Support consistent tyre contact with the road for predictable responses
  • Address age-related wear such as bouncing, leaks and poor body control
  • Contribute to long-term enjoyment and confidence in everyday driving

Common options & kits

Individual replacement parts Specific front or rear Koni standard dampers can be chosen to address a particular axle or corner where wear is most noticeable, letting you tackle issues step by step.

  • Ideal for targeted repairs
  • Lets you replace only what is needed
  • Useful when refreshing a single axle first

Matched sets or pairs Front or rear pairs of Koni standard dampers help ensure both sides of the axle behave consistently, which is important for balanced, predictable handling.

  • Consistent feel and behaviour left to right
  • Helps avoid uneven ride and damping
  • A sensible approach when servicing a tired suspension

Complete kits In some cases, grouped Koni packages allow you to refresh a full set of dampers in one go, useful if you are carrying out a broader suspension overhaul on your Porsche.

  • All specified dampers in a single package
  • Saves time compared with sourcing items individually
  • Well suited to restorations or full suspension refreshes

Brands available in this category

For this category we stock a wide choice of trusted brands for Porsche models. You can also browse and filter by brand on this page to focus on your preferred manufacturers.

When should you review or replace your Koni Standard Dampers?

Checking Koni standard dampers and related suspension items periodically helps you spot age-related wear before it affects how your Porsche feels to drive. Over time, seals, internal components and associated mounts can degrade, reducing control even if the change is gradual.

  • Existing dampers are bouncing, leaking or visibly aged
  • You notice instability, vague responses or a choppy ride from your Porsche
  • Tyres show uneven or accelerated wear that may be linked to poor damping
  • You are carrying out wider suspension work and want a consistent, refreshed setup

If any of these apply, it is a good time to review your Koni standard and replace anything that is past its best so your Porsche stays dependable and pleasant to drive.
