The Porsche 987 Cayman is one of the most underrated Porsche models currently on the market. It’s arguably one of the best sports cars you can buy at its price and considering they’re not ludicrous money (at the time of writing at least).
But just because it’s already a fantastic handling car with oodles of power, doesn’t mean it can’t be upgraded and improved – that’s exactly what we’re looking at today.
So without further ado, here are some brilliant upgrades we think you’ll like for your Porsche Cayman 987.
Exhaust upgrades for your Cayman
Noise, we need more noise! One thing that will really bring your driving experience to life is a shiny new stainless exhaust system to replace the rusting old stock one. It’s a simple fact that mild steel rusts over time, and unfortunately, most stock exhausts have seen better days. So why not replace it with a stainless system which will remain shiny for longer, looks fantastic and even better… sounds fantastic!
There are plenty of options on the market depending on what kind of noise you want, purpose and power gains you’re looking for. You can get some pretty decent performance out of a better free-flowing exhaust system such as the DesignTek Valvetronic sports exhaust system we stock on our website.
It unlocks around 12bhp and a respectable 15 ft-lbs of torque.
You can also open and close the valves so if you’re coming home late at night and trying to sneak back into the house, you can do so in stealth.
Damper upgrades for your 987 Cayman
There is a way to stiffen up your Porsche Cayman’s handling and that is by grabbing yourself some rather lovely adjustable dampers to improve your car’s ride and handling qualities.
There are so many different options out there – from fast road damper upgrades to full-on track-ready weapons.
A pretty decent choice is the Bilstein B16 dampers as they’re adjustable and can be set to whatever your use case is – regardless of whether your setup is for the road or track. You can even adjust the right height as well as nine different stiffness settings to dial your set-up right into how you want it.
Speaking of fast-road, if you’re looking for something more affordable and good value for money – Bilstein B6 dampers are perfect for fast road upgrades. Great for pushing on those country lanes, but also comfortable enough for daily use if you wanted to drive your car all year round.
Intake upgrades for a Porsche Cayman
If exhaust noise wasn’t enough for you, how about some intake noise? Intake noise can sometimes be one of the single best ways to improve your car’s engine note by letting it breathe air more efficiently, which in turn means louder induction noise.
You can get pretty decent power increases just from an intake upgrade too! The more cold air that you can ram into your intake the better and more efficient the bang. The example listed here adds around 20bhp and 18/lbs of Torque to your car which is a great improvement for not too much money.
Generally though, you’ll see the best performance results when combining an intake upgrade with a high-flow exhaust system as we mentioned earlier in this list as the entire system needs to be less restrictive.
IMS bearing upgrades and protection
Ah yes… the dreaded IMS bearing of death… well, the reality is that IMS bearing failure isn’t as common as you might expect. Despite all the doomsayers that will tell you your IMS bearing is immediately about to remove itself from existence, the failure rate of the IMS is only around 8% – which isn’t a small amount, but not a catastrophic number either.
It’s certainly not a bad thing being weary of the IMS bearing issues, but don’t let it put you off either.
If it does worry you, it’s probably worth spending a little bit of cash purely for peace of mind and upgrading your IMS bearing as a safety step to ensure that your engine remains in tip-top condition.

Crankshaft pulley upgrades for your Porsche Cayman
This is an upgrade that wouldn’t seem obvious to begin with – but makes a lot of sense the more you consider it. And that is about upgrading your Crankshaft pulley system.
“Why would I do that?” I hear you ask, well… this pulley is made from aluminium which is lighter and helps Improve horsepower and torque as it reduces parasitic drag from the alternator, power steering pump and water pump.
Small things like this can end up making quite a considerable difference when combined with a multitude of other upgrades and modifications. Every little helps, right?
You can grab one from our store here if you fancy it.
