Adrian’s 964: The One That Stuck

If you ask Adrian how it all started, he’ll probably smile and say, “It was always going to happen.” Growing up in Suffolk with a car-mad dad and a stack of Porsche 964 C2 posters on the bedroom wall, there was no escape. The obsession began early and never really let up.

“I was born a petrolhead,” he says. “My dad was into his motors, and I was surrounded by it from day one. The 911 was always the dream. The shape, the sound, the way it moved — it had something nothing else did.”

Films only added fuel to the fire. Le Mans with Steve McQueen. Condorman. Risky Business. Each one left a mark.

“I remember watching Le Mans and just being glued to the screen,” he says. “Then you’ve got the baddies in Condormanin those 935s, tearing it up. That stuff stays with you.”

And so the dream began — not as a collector’s fantasy, but as a simple ambition: one day, I’ll have one of those.

Building the Garage

Adrian’s owned a few Porsches over the years. A GT3 RS sits in the garage today. There’s also a Targa. But the most sentimental of the lot? That’d be the 964 Carrera 2 manual. The one he chased for years.

“I had a 993 C2 manual before this — great car, no doubt. But the 964 was always the one I missed,” he explains. “It was the model I wanted when I was younger, and I could never quite get it out of my system.”

Then one day, scrolling through listings, he spotted it. A 964 C2. Manual. One owner. Low mileage. But what really stopped him in his tracks? The colour.

“It was Amethyst Metallic. Not something you see every day — especially not on a standard 964. Maybe an RS, but this? I’d never come across one like it.”

The car had lived a quiet life in London. One careful owner for over 30 years. Full service history. Factory stickers still intact. It even had its original D90 alloys and flag mirrors — details most owners swap out without thinking.

“I might still change the wheels at some point,” he admits, “but for now, I really like how untouched it is. There’s something quite special about that.”

Adrian’s no stranger to fast cars. He’s got the kind of GT models that lap circuits all day without breaking a sweat. But the 964 scratches a different itch entirely.

“You don’t have to drive it flat-out to enjoy it,” he says. “That’s what I love about the air-cooled cars. You can just drop into third, listen to the engine, feel the road. That’s the experience.”

He talks about the joy of hearing the flat-six wind up, the slightly musty smell of oil and leather, the way the gearbox rewards a gentle hand. It’s not perfect. It’s not precise. But it’s full of character.

“I’ve had some of my best drives in that car at 40mph,” he grins. “You just… feel everything. There’s a connection you don’t get in newer stuff.”

To Adrian, no two 911s are the same. They’ve all got their own quirks, personalities, and ways of pulling you in.

“I’ve driven a lot of them over the years, and I still find something new every time. That’s the beauty of it. Some are fast and sharp, others are playful and a bit raw around the edges. But they’ve all got something about them.”

He enjoys switching between the cars depending on the mood or the road. “The GT3 RS is proper — full-on track weapon. But for a weekend drive, when I just want to take it all in, it’s the 964 every time.”

That variety keeps things fresh. It means every journey feels different — even if you’ve done the route a hundred times.

He’s met plenty of characters along the way — old boys reminiscing about their first 911s, young enthusiasts who are just getting started, and everyone in between.

“People stop you in car parks, at the petrol station. They’ve got a story, or they want to hear yours. It’s a proper community — and there’s a lot of love for these older models.”

He laughs at the idea of saving mileage. “No one wants to tell their grandkids, ‘I kept the mileage low.’ They want to hear about where you took it. Who you went with. What happened when you did.”

964 c2 – No Rush to Say Goodbye

For now, the 964’s going nowhere. It’s exactly the sort of car Adrian always wanted, and now that he has it, there’s no urge to move it on.

“It’s not the flashiest, it’s not the fastest. But it’s the one I always looked at and thought — yeah, that’s mine.”

And looking at the way he speaks about it — and drives it — it probably will be for a long while yet.
