Say Hello To My Not So Little Friend. A Famous Design That Had A Cameo In Scarface, The 928.

By Tom on Wednesday, September 8, 2021

The Porsche 928, a model often cited as one of the most original, notorious and strangely classic exterior designs ever created by Porsche in the 18 years the model ran, was conceived by Ernst Fuhrmann firstly in 1971 as a new fuel-efficient, luxury Porsche model; this was after brief flirts with other design ideas for models to succeed the 911.

Fuhrmann’s goal with the Porsche 928 was first to replace the flagship 911 model, which Fuhrmann believed was reaching its end in terms of competitive sports car models, but also to compete with the very prevalent oil crisis of the 70s – something that Ferdinand Porsche was also concerned with at the time.

The 928 zoomed into the consumer market in 1978 after orders to start production by Ferdinand Porsche, mostly receiving initial plaudit – shown by the fact the model won European Car of that year – as a rear-wheel, full-alloy M28 engine powered vehicle, that would not have looked out of place in the loosely lucid plot of a fantastical space-based Sci-Fi film.

So why did it largely fail when released?

The model almost immediately acquired a strong, but small, cult following due to its already cited external design, but also because of its sophisticated interior, which included a cooling system, radiator and power steering among other complex components. However, the success of the model was short-lived, as the majority of the Porsche aimed market far preferred the simplicity and more objectively timeless design of the Porsche 911, compared to the perhaps more grandiose configuration and aesthetic of the Porsche 928.

On top of all this, Porsche was also an Independent car manufacturer at the time of the model’s release, and this, coupled with the fact that they had only opened their doors 28 years earlier and that the car did not sell well at all, is very telling of why the Porsche 928 was unsurprisingly discontinued after the 1995 version of the model. It was then left to gather dust in the brain of the late 20th-century consumer (in contrast, it now collects far less dust in the hands of modern-day admirers, which there are now many of).

Although the car certainly had backtracks when released, the 928 is undoubtedly still among the most infamous, iconic and charming car designs in existence from Porsche. Luckily, concerns with maintenance from the late 20th-Century are now met with modern-day part solutions, which means you can still live and drive out your dream of owning, and running, one of these classic vehicles.

Let’s take a look together at parts you can use to upgrade, maintain and perfect your 928.

Fuel Pressure Regulator

A fuel pressure regulator pretty much does what it says on the tin; it manages pressure in a fuel injection system – providing more or less fuel pressure depending on what the engine needs. Why is this important? Without it, a fuel pump inevitably attempts to push far more fuel than what’s needed, which leads to failure, breakdown, expensive fixes and potentially even permanent damage.

Telltale signs of needing a pressure regulator are leaking fuel, having your car misfire or, the most obvious being, black smoke coming from your exhaust.

Hopefully, it’s now obvious why this part is an essential component for any car that has an electronic fuel injection system, but especially the Porsche 928 – which is why we offer this Fuel Pressure Regulator for the Porsche 928 (however, the part also seamlessly fits the Porsche 964).

This part fits: The Porsche 928 S4 / GT 1988-1991, Porsche 928 GTS 1992-95 and Porsche 964 C2 / C4 / RS 1989-94.

Transmission Mount

Your transmission is what keeps your wheels and engine spinning in tandem – a transmission mount, a lot like the engine mount, helps confine and control the vibrations produced by this.

Transmission mounts can actually go the whole nine yards and be functioning throughout your car’s lifespan (although typically there can be issues as the years rack on).

Some signs you need to replace your transmission mount are strange vibrations, issues with turning your vehicle and loud noises coming from your engine.

That’s why we have this transmission mount for your 928, to ensure extremely smooth sailing.

This part fits: Porsche 928 (1978 – 1982), Porsche 928 S (1980 – 1986), Porsche 928 S4 (1987 – 1991), Porsche 928 GTS (1992 – 1995)

Service Maintenance Kit

Typically, the idea of vehicle and service maintenance often leads to a sinking feeling in the stomach (maybe even more so with a model like the 928 given its critics).

I just got done financing the thing! You say to yourself while running through seemingly extortionate third-party maintenance options online, trying your luck at finding something affordable.

In actual fact, if you aren’t opposed to getting your hands grubby, doing some work and taking on some responsibility, service maintenance costs can be extremely affordable, not to mention you get to be involved in the condition of your automobile.

Take a look at our kit specifically composed of the tools you’ll need to work on maintaining your Porsche 928. It contains 1x 92810720107 Oil filter Red, 1x 90012301130 Sealing ring and 1x 92811018503 Air cleaner cartridge.

How on earth do I use this all by myself? It’s pretty simple. There are tons of (rather specific) YouTube videos and tutorials online that go over changin these parts. – you may even find yourself picking a new hobby (and having little extra cash leftover from keeping your prices down).

This part fits: Porsche 928 GTS 5.4L 1992-95

Ignition Coils

Ignition coils are quintessential to the condition of any car, not just the 928.

They work by taking low voltage currents directly from a car battery and then transfer it into a high voltage – strong enough for the spark plugs to then go on and create a spark as the battery isn’t capable of doing this alone (thus starting the car and stopping initial engine failure and any related problem).

You can look at it as the middleman between the car battery and sparkplug, the catalyst. As school degree science tells us, a catalyst is typically needed to create any kind of reaction and that’s why there is an ignition coil in every cylinder of a car – or specifically 2 ignition coils in the case of the Porsche 928.

Here we offer an ignition coil for your 928 which will help keep it consitently starting placidly.

This part fits: Porsche 911 1984-89 (not Turbo), Porsche 924S 1986-88

Porsche 944 1982-91, Porsche 964 C2 / C4 1989-94, Porsche 968 1992-95, Porsche 928 Cars Upto 1988 (2 Ignition Coils Per Car)

Brake pads

When you use your brake pedal, how often are you thinking about what is going on down there? For the average driver, this is almost never and they play on their luck (until there are noticeable problems, which happens more frequently with older age, higher mileage car with lower traction control).

Applying the brakes sends hydraulic fluid in the calliper against the brake pads which are situated on each side of the rotating brake disc; in turn, the friction created begins to bring your car to a halt.

Some common signs that your brakepads need changing are loud noises when your brakes are applied, unusal vibrations and your car indicating you with a warning light.

Brake pads are very important and regularly checking and replacing them is a must for any driver to make sure you’re safe on the roads.

The front brake pads found here are fit specifically for your Porsche 928 1986 or Porsche 928S.

This part fits: Porsche 928 1978-80 chassis number 92A08000750 onwards FRONT, Porsche 928S chassis number 92A0820001 onwards FRONT

Exhaust Final Silencer

An Exhaust Silencer does exactly what it sounds like, it muffles sounds from the exhaust or the internal combustion engine.

The silencer on your exhaust cancels out sounds that would be emitted by sound of your engine and carries the exhaust fumes out the the tail pipe at the rear, sending gasses out of the vehicle more effectively.

Choosing your exhaust silencer can be difficult, as you want to know what will be most effective at minimising sounds for your specific vehicle, which is why we offer this exhaust silencer specifically for the Porsche 928 1986, so you have seamless integration and the most effective silencing available on the market.

This part fits: Porsche 928 1986

Final Thoughts

The Porsche 928 remains a cult icon in the world of vehicles and the world of movies (shown by its Hollywood stints in Weird Science, Risky Business, and Scarface), with its otherworldly design and advanced components (the car set the stage for early passive rear-wheel steering systems and was even the quickest naturally aspirated production vehicle in the world in 1986) – which is why it’s no wonder so many enthusiasts dream of owning, and own, this model.

However, maintenance and parts should be at the front of your mind whether you own the 928 or are thinking of getting one, to ensure that your car runs as well and safely as possible.
