Top Porsche 981 Performance Upgrades
Even by the quirky standards of Porsche, the 981 was an anomaly. While first-gen Boxsters and Caymans shared components with the 911, the 981 was the first to be created from the tyres up. Out went 30kg of dead weight, in came bespoke doors, aggressive air-intakes, a longer wheelbase, and wider tracks. And now Design 911 offer you the chance to beef up your 981 even further.
Sharp intake!
Another Porsche upgrade on the 981 was to pull in air from both driver and passenger air intakes. Along with a considerably improved flow, internal dimpling controls turbulent air, reduces friction and “tumbles” over a given area more efficiently. See for yourself. Similarly, upgrading air filters is another option – you’ll need two, obviously.
Go with the throw.
A bespoke short throw shifter is a nice touch, offering a satisfying ‘rifle bolt’ feeling with each gear change. It’s one option among many gearshift accessories that include cables, caps and insulating tubing, all sold as kits for easy installation.
Steel wheels.
Clutch flywheels aren’t the first thing on the mind of the Porsche 981 owner looking to wring every ounce of performance from their car, but this upgrade promises a ‘drastically reduced moment of inertia’ – and who doesn’t want that? Equipped with Sachs or OEM pressure plates and release bearings, these kits cross over to racing spec without compromising street-level performance.
Hose the daddy?
These high-performance race-bred Goodridge street brake lines are a step up from the standard: a PTFE inner hose is swathed in braided stainless steel to deliver a more responsive and firm brake sensation by eliminating the “spongy” feel that often accompanies stock rubber brake lines.
Note perfect.
The sound of the engine is one of the best things that separate your Porsche aside from ‘sports cars’ that are only revved up versions of standard family runarounds. These accessories will help you get the most from this unique asset. DesignTek has crafted a unique range of silencers, mufflers, tailpipes that create the perfect engine note from the cockpit. Enjoy.
Suspension bridge.
There can be a difference between the body roll you expect when taking turns and cornering, particularly at higher speeds, and what you get. Coil over systems prevent the chassis from bottoming out, by support each wheel on the vehicle, and mitigating that roll. These Bilstein B16 damptronic coilover suspension kits will get your 981 rocking, not rolling.
Get your RSS in gear.
We’re saying it loud and proud. The RSS Tarmac Stage 2 suspension system is the most rigorously engineered, tested, validated, motorsport homologated aftermarket suspension system available for your Porsche 981 Cayman or Boxster. They’re winners on track and Tarmac for so many Porshe drivers that if you’re thinking of a single upgrade, then give this some serious thought.
No arm in looking.
Our high-quality track control arm and bush kits come pre-assembled with our signature polyurethane bushes for a ‘fit and forget’ product that we guarantee for life. And let’s not beat about it – replacing your rubber suspension bushes with Powerflex Polyurethane equivalents will improve road holding, increase tyre life, and enable more responsive steering. Meanwhile, a more consistent steering geometry will squeeze longer service from your suspension components.
