After 2+ years of development and 4 rounds of prototypes, the world debut of the CSF Porsche 911/930 Engine Oil Cooler at Rennsport Reunion 2023 was met with resounding enthusiasm. Air-cooled enthusiasts know the struggles associated with the oil cooler located on the engine block of the old flat six motor. CSF’s highly anticipated new release is arguably the most important modern engine upgrade to be released for the 911 in years.
While the original design was effective at the time, they have not aged well. On top of that, there have been no updates to the design and original replacement units can be hard to come by. When the CSF 911 was being built, CSF realized this was a much needed part for the air-cooled community and set out to design something special.

The old original coolers aren’t the only issue though. CSF has gotten many first hand reports of brand new OE coolers from Porsche’s revamped “Porsche Classic” Catalogue leaking within a few months of installation. Apparently the new items available from Porsche are not built as well as the original Behr coolers. CSF has now brought to market a modern OEM+ solution to this vintage design.

The high-performance core uses 7 cooling tubes with 8 rows of fins. Between the ultra efficient fin design and high flow tubes, the CSF cooler is ~10% more efficient than a brand new OE unit and up to 25% more efficient than a used unit.

Because the base plate of the cooler is also a common problem area, CSF sought to improve this area as much as possible. Instead of the original cast design, the CSF cooler uses a CNC machined billet aluminum plate. This offers a perfectly flat mounting surface which is both stronger and more resistant to warping over time. You’ll also notice a special helix design which adds strength while keeping weight at a minimum.

Each unit is Individually Leak and Pressure Tested with a 10 year warranty
New OEM coolers from Porsche are extremely scarce/hard to source and cost $1,300+

Manufactured to OE specifications for fit, flow capacity and durability, this oil pipe ensures efficient oil circulation while maintaining the correct operating temperature of the engine.

Fits:

  • Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
  • Porsche 911 1968-1973 2.2L / 2.4L / 2.7L RS LWB (F)

Diagram Ref No 16

Constructed from high-quality corrosion-resistant metal tubing with precision-formed bends and OE-style threaded connections, the oil pipe is engineered to withstand high oil pressures, elevated temperatures and continuous engine vibration. Designed to provide a secure, leak-free connection, it plays a vital role in the performance and longevity of Porsche's engine lubrication and oil cooling system.

What This Product Does:
  • Transfers engine oil to and from the front oil cooler.
  • Maintains efficient oil circulation throughout the lubrication system.
  • Supports effective engine oil cooling.
  • Helps regulate engine operating temperature.
  • Delivers a consistent supply of lubricating oil under pressure.
  • Provides secure, leak-free oil transfer between components.
  • Helps protect internal engine components from excessive wear.
  • Forms an essential part of the engine's oil cooling and lubrication system.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
  • Visible engine oil leaks.
  • Oil residue around the oil pipe or fittings.
  • Low engine oil level.
  • Oil pressure warning light.
  • Oil smell from the engine bay or underneath the vehicle.

Radiator Engine Oil Cooler Front "Snake Type"

Maintain the correct operating temperature of your classic air-cooled Porsche with this OE Match Front Engine Oil Cooler, commonly known as the Snake Type or Trombone Oil Cooler. Designed as a direct replacement for the original factory oil cooler fitted to Porsche 911 models from 1970-1973, this OE-quality component restores efficient engine oil cooling while preserving the originality of your vehicle.

Fits:

  • Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
  • Porsche 911 1968-1973 2.2L / 2.4L / 2.7L RS LWB (F)

Diagram ref no 22

Unlike later finned oil coolers, the trombone oil cooler uses a continuous loop of oil pipe mounted in the front wheel arch. As airflow passes over the curved tube, excess heat is dissipated from the engine oil before it returns to the engine. Its distinctive looped design earned it the nickname "Trombone Oil Cooler", and it remains an iconic feature of early long-wheelbase Porsche 911 models.

Manufactured to OE specifications, this replacement oil cooler offers excellent fitment, corrosion resistance and long-term durability, making it ideal for restorations, maintenance or replacing damaged original units.

What Does the Oil Cooler Do?

Engine oil performs two vital functions in an air-cooled Porsche: lubricating internal engine components and carrying away excess heat.

The front-mounted Snake Type oil cooler helps to:

  • Reduce engine oil temperature.
  • Improve lubrication under demanding driving conditions.
  • Protect internal engine components from excessive heat.
  • Maintain stable oil viscosity.
  • Increase engine reliability and longevity.
  • Support consistent engine performance during warm weather and spirited driving.

Although simple in design, the trombone cooler provides a significant improvement in oil temperature control compared to engines without a front-mounted oil cooler.

Why Do Oil Coolers Need Replacing?

After decades of service, oil coolers can become damaged or less effective due to:

  • External corrosion.
  • Stone impacts and road debris.
  • Internal contamination.
  • Oil leaks caused by corrosion or physical damage.
  • Accident damage.
  • Previous poor repairs or deformation of the cooling loop.

Replacing a damaged oil cooler helps maintain correct oil temperatures while preventing potentially expensive engine damage caused by oil loss.

Symptoms of a Failing Oil Cooler

Common warning signs include:

  • Visible oil leaks around the cooler.
  • Rising engine oil temperatures.
  • Oil residue around the front wheel arch.
  • Corroded or damaged cooling tube.
  • Reduced cooling efficiency.
  • Oil pressure concerns caused by oil loss.
  • Physical damage from road debris.

If any oil leakage is present, the cooling system should be inspected immediately.

When Should the Trombone Oil Cooler Be Replaced?

Replacement is recommended when:

  • Oil leaks develop.
  • Corrosion weakens the cooling tube.
  • Accident damage has occurred.
  • Restoring a classic Porsche to factory specification.
  • Replacing damaged front oil lines.
  • Carrying out a complete oil cooling system overhaul.

Replacing ageing cooling components helps maintain reliable engine temperature control and protects your investment.

Why Choose an OE Match Oil Cooler?

Our OE Match Snake Type oil cooler has been engineered to closely replicate the original Porsche component.

Benefits include:

  • Correct Trombone (Snake Type) design.
  • OE-quality construction.
  • Precision-formed cooling loop.
  • Corrosion-resistant finish.
  • Excellent oil flow characteristics.
  • Straightforward installation using factory mounting points.
  • Ideal for restorations and originality-focused vehicles.
