Product Information

The 901 613 503 20 is a dashboard-mounted mechanical or push-pull switch used in early Porsche 911 / 911S / 911L and 912 models (1960s era) to activate the front fog lights. It is often grouped with the rear-window heating and warning-light switches, depending on vehicle specification.

In use, pulling or pressing the switch completes the circuit for the fog lights, sending power (via fuse and relay) to the fog lamp units. The switch usually has an internal light (“light-pipe”) or indicator so you can tell when fog lights are active.

Fits:
  • Porsche 911 65-68 + 911S, 912 USA version 911L with red lighting strip
  • Porsche 911 1965-1968 2.0L / 912 SWB (F)
  • Porsche 912E 4CYL 1976

Why / when it should be replaced

·         Even though the fog light switch is a relatively simple component, there are several reasons why it might need replacing:

·         Internal wear or contact failure. Over time, the internal contacts inside the switch can wear, corrode, or lose tension, leading to poor electrical contact. If that happens, the fog lights may not activate when the switch is engaged.

·         No illumination of the switch itself. On models where the switch includes a light-pipe or internal lamp so that you can see the switch position, failure of that internal illumination can make it harder to know whether the fog lights are on and may indicate internal switch failure.

·         Switch stuck or mechanically broken. The pull/knob mechanism may become sticky, stuck, or physically break, especially after decades of use, or due to heat/cockpit environment ageing. A switch that doesn’t move properly or won’t stay in the “on” position cannot reliably activate the fog lights.

·         Intermittent operation / flickering. Even if the switch appears to work, intermittent contact inside the switch might cause the fog lights to flicker, drop out, or not turn off properly.

·         Fuse or wiring feedback problems. In some cases, a failing switch can lead to blown fog-light fuses or feedback to wiring loops, especially if there is an internal short or poor contact. Replacing the switch may be required after troubleshooting electrical issues.

From small replacement bulbs to complete lighting assemblies, we offer OEM Porsche parts alongside quality aftermarket solutions.

When Should I Replace Porsche Lighting?

Lighting is something drivers often take for granted — until it fails. Replacing bulbs and assemblies at the
first sign of trouble is the safest approach. Common reasons to replace or service your lighting include:

  • Blown Bulbs – keep spares on hand to avoid roadside tickets or downtime
  • Fading or Yellowed Lenses – older headlights often become discoloured and scratched, reducing brightness
  • Intermittent Interior Lighting – usually caused by wiring faults or failing components
  • Dim Indicators or Brake Lights – reduces communication with other drivers and increases accident risk

Indicators are crucial for road safety - check them regularly and replace faulty units immediately.

Common Porsche Lighting Issues
Discoloured or Faded Indicators - Over time, indicator lenses can become cloudy or faded, reducing visibility. Cleaning and polishing can help, but often replacement is the best solution.

Headlight Lens Damage -
After 5+ years, headlights can yellow, scratch, or haze. While refurbishment can restore some clarity, they rarely return to “as-new” condition. Replacing with fresh headlights ensures maximum brightness and safety.

Internal Lighting Faults -
Cabin and dashboard lights may work intermittently due to wiring or failing units. In most cases, replacing the faulty component resolves the issue.

Wiring Wear -
Age and heat can cause wiring deterioration. Identifying the faulty circuit and replacing affected parts restores reliability.

Lighting Fitment, System Compatibility and Quality

Correct lighting fitment is critical for safety, beam accuracy, and compliance with road regulations. All lighting components supplied by Design911 are selected to meet factory specifications for reliable performance.

Matched to Original Porsche Lighting Standards

Lighting components are engineered to match original mounting points, beam patterns, and electrical requirements. This ensures consistent illumination, safe operation, and factory-correct appearance.

Designed for Accurate System Integration

Lighting systems rely on precise interaction between multiple components, including:

  • Headlamps, bulbs, and control units
  • Indicators and relay systems
  • Brake lights and rear reflectors
  • Interior lighting and switches.

Products such as HID light kits and LED daytime running lamps are designed to integrate seamlessly without compromising existing systems.

Reducing Visibility and Electrical Issues

Incorrect or low-quality lighting parts can lead to poor visibility, electrical faults, or MOT failures. Using OEM or Genuine Porsche components ensures long-term reliability and optimal light performance.

Porsche Lighting Maintenance and Longevity

Lighting components are exposed to environmental conditions such as moisture, UV light, and temperature changes, which can lead to degradation over time. Regular inspection and timely replacement help maintain performance and safety.

Component Typical Service or Inspection Interval Common Signs of Wear
Headlamps Inspect every 5–10 years Clouding, reduced brightness, condensation
Bulbs Inspect annually Dim output, flickering, failure
Longevity Inspect every 8–12 years Partial failure, uneven lighting
Indicators Inspect every 5–10 years Weak flashing, cracked lenses
Fog Lamps Inspect every 5–10 years Water ingress, reduced clarity
Brake Lights Inspect every 3–5 years Delayed illumination, failure
Interior Lights Inspect every 5–10 years Flickering, discolouration
Number Plate Lamps Inspect every 5–8 years Dim light, corrosion
Wiring & Connectors Inspect every 10+ years Intermittent faults, corrosion

This table provides guidance on maintaining lighting performance and preventing visibility or compliance issues.

Porsche Lighting Reliability and Upgrade Advice

Lighting plays a critical role in both safety and vehicle presentation. Over time, components such as headlamps, bulbs, and electrical connections can degrade, reducing visibility and increasing the risk of faults. Replacing worn components ensures consistent performance and maintains road safety standards.

Upgrading to modern lighting solutions, such as complete light packages or LED systems, can significantly improve brightness, energy efficiency, and longevity while maintaining compatibility with Porsche electrical systems.

Benefits of Preventative Replacement

  • Improved Visibility: New headlamps, bulbs, and LED upgrades provide clearer illumination and safer driving conditions.
  • Reliable Electrical Performance: Replacing ageing components reduces the risk of faults and intermittent failures.
  • Enhanced Vehicle Appearance: Clean, bright lighting improves the overall look of the vehicle.
  • Correct Fit and Compatibility: OEM and Genuine Porsche parts ensure seamless integration with existing systems.
  • Reduced Long-Term Costs: Preventative maintenance avoids repeated replacements and labour costs.
  • Support for Restoration and Upgrades: Ideal for restoring classic models or upgrading modern vehicles with improved lighting technology.
Design911 supports lighting maintenance, restoration, and upgrades across all Porsche models. From replacement bulbs and lenses to complete headlamp units and LED systems, every component is selected for precise fitment, durability, and performance.
