Porsche 911 996 - suspension upgrades amazing results | Mat Vlogs

I bought a Porsche 911 996 3.4-litre Carrera back in September 2016. It was in pretty good condition, but after 18 years' use and 55,000 miles, its suspension was well past its best. Also, out of the factory the car was set up with plenty of understeer built in to make it far more benign than any 911 before it. I wanted to make my car not only feel like new, but better than new.

And so a complete suspension overhaul was needed. I decided to go with Ohlins Road and Track coilovers, Powerflex polyurethane bushes and adjustable anti-roll bars and drop links. Please note that in this video all the parts were supplied by the relevant manufacturers free-of-charge for use in the video. However, I selected them based research as to which set-up would be most suited to my needs for the car. Design 911 also did the work free-of-charge, once again I chose to feature them in the video due to their expertise in Porsche parts supply and fitting.

Anti-Roll Bar, Front.
The Porsche Front Anti-Roll Bar is a genuine OEM suspension component engineered to deliver sharper handling and stability for Porsche 911 (996) GT2 and GT3 models. Also known as a front sway bar or stabilizer bar, it links the left and right sides of the suspension to reduce body roll during cornering.

Fits:
  • Porsche 996 GT2 2001-05
  • Porsche 996 GT3 MKI 1999-02
  • Porsche 996 GT3 MKII 2003>>

What This Product Does:
The anti-roll bar connects the left and right front suspension of the vehicle. Its job is to resist body roll (leaning) when cornering. When you go around a corner, the bar twists and applies counteracting force, helping to keep the car flatter.

Symptoms Of A Worn / Failing Anti-Roll Bar:

  • Excessive body roll during cornering, the car leans more than usual in turns.
  • Poor handling stability especially in high speed corners or under load; reduced steering precision.
  • Clunking or knocking noises from the front when going over bumps or changing direction, bushings or mounts for the bar may be worn.
  • Loose or imprecise steering feel, you may feel slack or less control when pushing hard.
  • Uneven tyre wear possibly, if roll or suspension geometry is being affected.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Restores Handling Performance: a correct, stiff anti-roll bar helps keep the car stable, improves cornering, reduces understeer/oversteer.
  • Enhances Safety: better control in corners, especially in emergency manoeuvres, reduces risk.
  • Protects Related Suspension Components: worn bushings or a failing sway bar can put extra load on other parts (shock absorbers, control arms) causing premature wear.
  • Maintain OEM Dynamics: for Porsche models like GT2 / GT3 the suspension tuning (bar stiffness etc) is part of what makes the driving experience. Using the correct sway bar helps preserve that.
  • Improves Comfort: although sway bars make the ride stiffer, a failing or loose bar typically results in noisy, uncomfortable ride (clunks, rattles), so replacement improves overall feel.

Lateral support clamp anti roll bar.

powerflex

Anti-Roll Bars (ARB’s) play an important role in a vehicle’s suspension system, helping to reduce body roll by transferring cornering load from one side of a vehicle to the other.

Often mounted to the vehicle’s chassis with rubber bushes, these bushes ensure the bar works as intended. To prevent the anti-roll bar from moving laterally within its mounts when turning, OE manufacturers will either bond the bushes to the bar, add dead-stops to the bar itself, or rely solely on the clamping pressure of the rubber.

But what happens when those bushes wear and need to be replaced? Often anti-roll bars with bonded bushes come as a costly complete assembly, so the alternative is to fit a more cost-effective unbonded polyurethane replacement, like the many we offer.

In most cases, friction from the bush will prevent any side-to-side bar movement. Still, when turning aggressively or cornering at higher speeds, a laterally shifting anti-roll bar decreases the efficiency and effectiveness of the bar, changing the dynamics of your suspension system in unpredictable ways. It also poses the risk of the bar fouling on other areas of the vehicle or suspension system.

About Anti Roll Bar

In this video, Lawrence from Design 911 walks you through everything you need to know about your Porsche's anti-roll bar. Learn how this crucial component helps to stabilise your vehicle during cornering, enhancing both safety and performance. Lawrence breaks down the function, design, and installation process, ensuring that you're fully informed whether you're a seasoned Porsche enthusiast or just starting to explore the mechanics of your car.

Porsche Anti-Roll Bars | Design911 Suspension Components for Handling & Cornering Stability

Anti-roll bars — also known as sway bars or stabiliser bars — are essential suspension components that reduce body roll during cornering, keeping your Porsche balanced, stable, and predictable. They connect the left and right sides of the suspension system, distributing weight evenly to improve grip and steering precision. Whether on road or track, a properly functioning anti-roll bar ensures your Porsche maintains its signature agility and handling confidence.

At Design911, we offer a full range of anti-roll bars, drop links, and mounting hardware designed for precision fitment and enhanced suspension performance. Manufactured from high-strength steel or lightweight alloys, our anti-roll bars deliver optimal stiffness, durability, and performance. Perfect for servicing, performance tuning, or full suspension restoration, these components enhance control, responsiveness, and driver confidence in all driving conditions.

What Do Anti-Roll Bars Do?

Anti-roll bars work to reduce chassis movement by linking the suspension on both sides of the car, helping maintain flat, stable cornering.

Core Functions:
• Reduce body roll during turns and rapid direction changes.
• Improve steering precision and balance.
• Enhance tyre contact with the road for maximum grip.
• Distribute load evenly across the suspension.
• Maintain predictable handling in performance driving.

A correctly functioning anti-roll bar is key to achieving Porsche’s renowned cornering stability and driving dynamics.

Why Do Anti-Roll Bars Fail or Degrade?

Anti-roll bars and their associated components endure constant torsional stress, road impacts, and environmental exposure — leading to wear or fatigue over time.

Common Causes of Failure Include:
• Worn or cracked anti-roll bar bushes causing excess movement.
• Corrosion or fatigue in the bar or drop links.
• Loose or damaged mounting brackets.
• Degraded rubber isolators or seized joints.
• Stress fractures from aggressive driving or high cornering loads.

When anti-roll bars or their mounts fail, symptoms can include clunking noises, unstable cornering, poor handling response, and uneven tyre wear — making timely replacement crucial for safety and performance.

Why Replace or Upgrade Your Porsche Anti-Roll Bar?

Replacing or upgrading your Porsche’s anti-roll bar restores stability, reduces body roll, and improves overall handling precision. Upgraded materials and adjustable designs allow for fine-tuning performance and chassis balance.

Key Benefits:
• Restores flat, stable cornering and improved traction.
• Enhances steering feedback and chassis balance.
• Reduces body roll and weight transfer.
• Available in standard, reinforced, or adjustable designs.
• Fits Porsche 911, 944, 968, Boxster, Cayman, Cayenne, and Macan models.
• Ideal for performance tuning, servicing, or restoration.

Design911’s Porsche anti-roll bars and suspension components are built for strength, precision, and control — delivering superior handling, comfort, and confidence for every Porsche driver.
