What This Product Does:
- The muffler (silencer/back-box) is the final large component in the exhaust system: it reduces noise, completes the exhaust flow path, and ensures the exhaust gases are safely expelled under the rear of the vehicle.
- It helps maintain the correct back-pressure, supports the exhaust hangers and alignment, and plays a role in sound tuning (ensuring the vehicle meets factory acoustic specification).
- Correct fitment ensures the tailpipes, hangers, connections and appearance align with factory standards—especially important for OEM look, sound, and performance.
- Excessive noise, harsh exhaust tone, or sudden change in sound (potential sign of internal baffle damage or leaks).
- Visible corrosion, holes, cracks or rust on the muffler body or tail-pipe connections—common on older 996 cars.
- Poor fitment or misalignment of the muffler/tailpipe assembly (exhaust shifting, visible sagging or melted brackets).
- Reduced performance / overheating of nearby components due to exhaust misalignment or exhaust gases contacting bodywork.
- Bad or broken mounting/hanger points causing vibration or movement under load.
Why Replacement Matters:
- Replacing worn or damaged mufflers restores correct sound, fit and backing support of the full exhaust system.
- Maintains factory appearance and acoustic characteristics — important for value, authenticity and drive-quality in the 996 series.
- Prevents further damage: a failing muffler may lead to hanger failure, alignment issues or heat damage to nearby components.

The Fabspeed 70mm Supersport X-Pipe Exhaust System is a high-performance exhaust upgrade designed specifically for the 2001–2005 Porsche 996 GT2.
Fits:
- Porsche 996 GT2 2001-05
Engineered to improve exhaust gas flow and reduce restriction compared with the original exhaust system, the 70mm X-pipe configuration provides a freer-flowing route for gases leaving the twin-turbocharged engine. The system is designed to produce a stronger sports-car exhaust note while supporting improved throttle and turbocharger response.
The system incorporates 200-cell HJS Sport catalytic converters and is manufactured from 14–16 gauge CNC mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel for durability, corrosion resistance and efficient exhaust flow.
Fabspeed reports gains of approximately 29 wheel horsepower and 39 ft-lb of torque, although actual results will vary depending on vehicle condition, modifications, fuel and operating conditions.
What This Product Does:
The exhaust system carries combustion gases away from the turbochargers and engine while controlling exhaust flow, sound and emissions.
On a high-performance turbocharged engine such as the Porsche 996 GT2, reducing unnecessary restriction downstream of the turbochargers can help exhaust gases leave the system more efficiently.
The Fabspeed Supersport X-Pipe is designed to:
- Improve exhaust gas flow
- Reduce post-turbo exhaust restriction
- Support improved horsepower and torque
- Help reduce turbo lag
- Improve throttle and engine response
- Produce a sportier and more aggressive exhaust note
- Provide high-flow catalytic converter performance
- Improve long-term corrosion resistance
The X-pipe arrangement also combines exhaust flow from both sides of the engine, contributing to the system's distinctive sound and freer-flowing characteristics.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The original exhaust system on a Porsche 996 GT2 is now potentially more than two decades old. Repeated heat cycles, vibration, condensation and road exposure can gradually deteriorate exhaust components.
Common symptoms include:
- Rust or corrosion on exhaust pipework
- Cracks around welds or joints
- Exhaust blowing, ticking or hissing noises
- Black soot deposits around leaking connections
- Loose or damaged exhaust clamps
- Rattling from silencers or catalytic converters
- Metallic noises from broken catalyst material
- Exhaust fumes around the rear of the vehicle
- Increased or irregular exhaust noise
- Reduced throttle response
- Increased turbo lag
- Noticeable loss of engine performance
- Check Engine Light associated with catalyst efficiency
- Restricted exhaust flow
- Sulphur-like or unusual exhaust smells
- Damaged or deformed exhaust pipework
A deteriorating catalytic converter can also break down internally. The substrate may become damaged, loose or partially blocked, potentially restricting exhaust flow.
Why Replacement Matters:
A damaged or restrictive exhaust can affect more than sound.
Exhaust leaks allow hot gases to escape before reaching the intended outlets and can expose nearby components to unnecessary heat. Cracked joints and corroded pipework can also worsen over time until sections of the exhaust become loose or fail.
A damaged or partially blocked catalytic converter can create significant exhaust restriction.
This is particularly relevant to the twin-turbocharged 996 GT2, where efficient exhaust flow downstream of the turbochargers contributes to responsive turbo operation. Excessive restriction can work against efficient gas evacuation and negatively affect engine response.
Replacing worn factory components helps restore:
- A secure and leak-free exhaust route
- Efficient exhaust gas evacuation
- Consistent turbocharger response
- Correct exhaust outlet operation
- Reduced risk of further corrosion-related failure
For owners upgrading a healthy standard exhaust, the Fabspeed system provides the additional benefits of increased flow, a stronger exhaust note and increased performance potential.

- Porsche 996 C4 3.6L 1999-2004
Designed for drivers seeking maximum exhaust sound, reduced rear-end weight and improved exhaust flow, these bypass pipes remove the sound-deadening restriction of the original mufflers and create a much more aggressive, motorsport-inspired flat-six exhaust note.
Manufactured from mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel, the pipes provide a direct bolt-on installation without requiring cutting or welding.
What This Product Does:
The factory rear mufflers reduce exhaust noise by directing exhaust gases through internal chambers and sound-attenuating passages.
While this provides a quieter and more refined driving experience, the mufflers also add considerable weight and create some resistance to exhaust flow.
The Fabspeed Muffler Bypass Pipes replace these factory mufflers with much simpler straight-through pipework.
This is designed to:
- Reduce exhaust restriction
- Improve exhaust-gas flow
- Reduce rear-end weight
- Increase exhaust volume
- Produce a more aggressive flat-six sound
- Improve engine response
- Support increased horsepower and torque
- Create a motorsport-inspired exhaust character
Straight Through Exhaust Design:
- Rather than passing through a conventional silencer, exhaust gases travel through the bypass pipes with minimal sound attenuation.
- This creates a much more direct exhaust path.
- Reduced restriction can help the engine evacuate exhaust gases more efficiently, particularly when combined with other performance exhaust components.
- The trade-off is a substantial increase in exhaust volume.
Performance Benefits:
Fabspeed reports dyno-tested gains of:
Horsepower: +23 WHP
Torque: +45 ft-lb
Weight Reduction: Over 35 lb
Fabspeed states that the power and torque improvements are carried throughout the RPM range.

The Fabspeed Muffler Bypass Exhaust System is a high-performance exhaust upgrade designed for the 2000–2005 Porsche 996 Turbo.
Fits:
- Porsche 996 TURBO 2000-05
Developed for drivers looking for maximum exhaust character and reduced restriction, the system replaces the restrictive factory muffler arrangement with a much freer-flowing bypass design. The result is a significantly louder, more aggressive exhaust note together with improved exhaust flow, sharper throttle response and reduced rear-end weight.
Fabspeed offers the system in two configurations. The Race configuration uses catalyst-bypass pipes for maximum flow. Fabspeed notes that emissions-related configurations may be restricted to closed-course or off-road use depending on local legislation, so applicable regulations should be checked before installation.
Manufactured from 14–16 gauge CNC mandrel-bent T304L stainless steel, the system is designed to provide excellent heat resistance, corrosion resistance and long-term durability. Fabspeed also states that the system removes approximately 45 lb (20 kg) from the rear of the vehicle compared with the factory arrangement.
What This Product Does:
The exhaust system carries combustion gases away from the turbochargers and engine. Factory mufflers are designed to control exhaust volume, but they also introduce resistance into the exhaust path.
The Fabspeed Muffler Bypass system removes much of this restriction by providing a more direct exhaust route.
Its key functions and benefits include:
- Reducing exhaust backpressure and restriction
- Improving exhaust gas flow
- Helping the turbocharged engine breathe more freely
- Improving throttle response
- Supporting increased horsepower and torque
- Producing a much louder and more aggressive exhaust note
- Reducing weight at the rear of the vehicle
- Replacing ageing factory exhaust components with stainless-steel alternatives
Fabspeed publishes gains of approximately 37 hp and 42 lb-ft of torque for this system, although actual results can vary depending on vehicle condition, modifications and configuration.
This is one of Fabspeed's more aggressive exhaust options and is particularly suited to owners prioritising performance and exhaust sound rather than factory-level refinement.
Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
Porsche 996 Turbo models are now more than two decades old, meaning original exhaust components may have experienced thousands of heat cycles along with moisture, road salt and vibration.
Common signs of exhaust deterioration include:
- Rust or corrosion on exhaust pipes or silencers
- Cracks around welds and joints
- Exhaust leaks
- Blowing, ticking or hissing noises
- Rattling from deteriorated muffler internals
- Loose exhaust components or mounting points
- Increased exhaust noise in unexpected areas
- Exhaust fumes around the rear of the vehicle
- Soot deposits around leaking joints
- Reduced engine performance
- Slower or less responsive turbo performance
- Increased exhaust restriction
- Check Engine Light associated with catalyst efficiency
- Metallic rattling from damaged catalytic converter material
- Sulphur-like or unusual exhaust smells
- Visible damage to exhaust pipework
A deteriorated or internally damaged catalytic converter can also restrict exhaust flow. This may contribute to reduced performance and increased exhaust temperatures.
Why Replacement / Upgrading Matters:
- A leaking, corroded or restricted exhaust system can affect both performance and reliability.
- On a turbocharged engine such as the Porsche 996 Turbo, efficient exhaust flow downstream of the turbochargers is particularly important. Excessive restriction can work against efficient gas evacuation and may negatively affect throttle response and overall performance.
- Exhaust leaks can also produce unwanted noise and allow hot exhaust gases to escape close to surrounding components. Severe corrosion can weaken pipework, joints and mounting points until components become loose or fail completely.
- A damaged or partially blocked catalytic converter can create additional exhaust restriction and potentially increase thermal stress within the exhaust system.
- Replacing deteriorated factory components with the Fabspeed Muffler Bypass system restores a secure exhaust path while substantially reducing restriction and weight. For owners seeking a performance-focused setup, it also provides a much more pronounced turbocharged exhaust sound.

Catalytic converters can deteriorate internally with age and repeated heat cycling. A damaged catalyst substrate may break apart, rattle or restrict exhaust flow, potentially reducing performance.
Why Replacement / Upgrading Matters:
- A damaged or heavily deteriorated exhaust system can affect more than sound and appearance. Exhaust leaks can allow gases to escape before reaching the intended outlets, while damaged or restricted catalytic converters can interfere with exhaust flow and reduce engine performance.
- This is particularly important on a turbocharged Porsche 996, where efficient exhaust flow downstream of the turbochargers plays an important role in overall engine and turbocharger performance.
- Replacing an ageing or restrictive exhaust system can help restore secure, leak-free exhaust operation while improving flow and durability. For owners seeking a performance upgrade, the Fabspeed Supersport system also provides larger-diameter pipework and a freer-flowing X-pipe configuration designed to take greater advantage of the 996 Turbo's performance potential.

- The stainless-steel construction also offers improved resistance to corrosion compared with an ageing original exhaust, making the system suitable both as a replacement for deteriorated components and as a performance-oriented upgrade.

The Fabspeed Porsche 996 GT3 Supercup Exhaust System is a lightweight, straight-through performance exhaust designed for drivers seeking maximum exhaust flow, reduced backpressure and an extremely aggressive motorsport-inspired sound from the naturally aspirated 996 GT3 flat-six.
Fits:
- Porsche 996 GT3 MKI 1999-02
- Porsche 996 GT3 MKII 2003>>
Developed with track use in mind, the Supercup system replaces the more restrictive factory rear exhaust arrangement with freer-flowing 2.25-inch CNC mandrel-bent T304L stainless-steel tubing. The straight-through configuration dramatically reduces restriction while allowing the distinctive GT3 flat-six exhaust note to become considerably more pronounced.
Fabspeed reports gains of approximately +20 HP and +17 lb-ft of torque, together with an approximate 10 lb reduction in weight. Actual results will depend on the individual vehicle, exhaust configuration and operating conditions.
What This Product Does:
The exhaust system carries combustion gases away from the engine while influencing exhaust restriction, engine breathing, sound and overall performance.
The factory system must balance performance with road-car requirements for noise, refinement and comfort.
The Fabspeed Supercup system takes a much more performance-focused approach.
Its straight-through design is intended to:
- Dramatically reduce exhaust backpressure
- Improve exhaust-gas flow
- Improve engine breathing
- Increase horsepower and torque potential
- Reduce exhaust-system weight
- Produce a significantly louder exhaust note
- Emphasise the naturally aspirated flat-six sound
- Provide a more motorsport-oriented driving experience
Straight Through Supercup Design:
- The defining feature of this system is its straight-through exhaust configuration.
- Rather than prioritising maximum sound suppression, the Supercup system provides a freer route for exhaust gases leaving the engine.
- Reduced restriction can help exhaust gases leave the engine more efficiently, particularly at higher engine speeds where gas volume increases substantially.
- This makes the system particularly appropriate for performance and track-focused 996 GT3 applications.
Manufacturer Reported Performance:
Fabspeed lists performance figures of approximately:
Power: +20 HP
Torque: +17 lb-ft
Weight Reduction: Approx. 10 lb
These figures are manufacturer-reported and should not be considered guaranteed gains for every vehicle.
Actual performance can vary according to:
