Timing chain guide.
Genuine Porsche Original Equipment (OE) timing chain guide used in the timing system. It provides a precisely engineered surface against which the timing chain runs, helping maintain correct chain alignment and reduce chain noise and wear.
Sold each, 2 required per engine.

Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.5L / 2.7L / 3.2L 1997 - 2002
Porsche 996 3.4L 1998 - 2001

Diagram ref no 33.

The timing chain guide provides a wear-resistant contact surface that supports the timing chain’s path as it moves over the crankshaft and camshaft sprockets. It helps maintain correct chain alignment, reduces vibration and chatter, and minimises wear on the chain and related components - especially under repeated load cycles and high-RPM conditions.

Installed inside the timing case, this OE guide sits in the chain’s routing path and provides a controlled sliding surface that interacts with the chain links. It works in conjunction with the timing chain tensioner (e.g., 99610517552) to ensure correct chain tension, reduce chain slack, and preserve accurate valve timing as designed by Porsche.

The timing chain guide is a critical wear item in Porsche M96 engines. Over time, the original guide surfaces can wear, crack, or deform due to friction and engine heat. A compromised guide can lead to timing chain noise (often described as “chain rattle”), reduced tension control, or uneven wear of the chain and sprockets.

Replacing worn or failed guides with a Genuine Porsche OE part restores the exact engineered surface, ensures accurate chain control, reduces noise, and helps protect high-cost timing system components - preserving the precision and performance that Porsche designed into the engine.

When to replace:
•  Engine exhibits timing chain noise, especially at start-up or idle
•  Timing chain slack or vibration is observed
•  During major engine service or rebuild
•  When original guide shows cracking, abrasion, or wear scoring
•  Preventive replacement on high-mile engines

Timing chain guide.
OE Match timing chain guide designed to replicate the original Porsche factory component used in the timing chain system of certain Porsche flat-six engines. It provides a smooth, wear-resistant surface against which the timing chain runs, helping maintain correct chain alignment and reduce noise.
Sold each, 2 required per engine.

Fits:
Porsche 986 Boxster 2.5L / 2.7L / 3.2L 1997 - 2002
Porsche 996 3.4L 1998 - 2001

Diagram Ref No 33.

The timing chain guide provides a guided surface for the timing chain, helping it run smoothly over the cam and crank sprockets. It helps minimize vibration, reduce “chain slap,” and maintain correct chain tracking as the chain cycles through its range of motion.

Function: Installed within the timing cover/case, the guide sits along the chain’s routing path and offers a stable, sliding surface that interacts with the chain links. In conjunction with the timing chain tensioner (such as part 99610517552), it helps maintain correct chain tension, reduces wear on both the chain and sprockets, and supports quiet, efficient engine operation.

Timing chain guides are wear items subject to constant chain contact and engine vibration. Over time, original guides can wear unevenly, crack, or shed material - which can lead to chain noise, reduced tension stability, and accelerated wear on the chain and sprockets. Replacing worn guides with an OE Match component helps preserve timing accuracy and reduces the risk of serious timing system damage.

When to replace:
Engine exhibits chain rattle or timing noise
Original guides are cracked, worn, or contaminated
Timing system is being serviced or rebuilt
 During high-mile preventive maintenance
 After tensioner service or replacement

What This Product Does:

  • The guide/slide rail helps maintain correct path and tension for the timing chain, preventing the chain from flopping, jumping, or hitting other components.

Symptoms Of Failure:
  • Rattling or clattering noise from the timing chain cover area (especially at cold start or idle) because the chain may be loose and hitting the guide/rail or adjacent parts.
  • Poor engine performance: misfires, rough idle, hesitation on acceleration. This is because incorrect timing = valves and pistons not synchronised.
  • Check Engine Light: with timing or cam/crank correlation codes. If the chain jumps or the guide fails significantly, the timing can get out of spec, triggering the ECU.
  • Metal shavings in oil or oil pan (in more advanced wear). If the chain or guide breaks up, fragments can circulate.
  • Engine won’t start or sudden failure in worst-case: if timing chain jumps many teeth or breaks, the engine may stop or suffer internal damage.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Because the timing chain and its guides are critical for engine timing: if the guide rail fails and allows the chain to slip, the engine’s valve timing will go off. This can lead to serious internal engine damage (valves hitting pistons, heavy wear) in many high-performance engines.
  • Replacing the guide rail (and possibly the chain, tensioners, etc) before catastrophic failure helps avoid a full engine rebuild or replacement, which is far more expensive.
  • Even though the part itself may not be extremely expensive (the guide rail), the labour cost of access is high (because to reach it you may need to remove covers, maybe ancillary components) — doing it early is more cost-effective.
  • Ensures the engine continues to operate as designed, maintaining performance, reliability and longevity.

What This Product Does:

  • The timing chain synchronises the crankshaft with other components — here especially linking to the oil pump / cam drive path — so that the engine’s valves operate at the correct times relative to piston movement.
  • Over time, chains can stretch, guides may wear, tensioners may degrade — all of which will allow slack in the drive, noise, timing drift or even failure.
  • Essentially, this chain is a critical link in the engine’s timing system — it must stay within spec to ensure the engine runs as designed.

When You Should Consider Replacement:
  • Rattling or clattering noise from the engine’s timing‐cover area, especially on cold start, idle or at low revs. Slack chain often causes this.
  • Timing-related fault codes — cam/ crank correlation errors, or variable valve timing issues that could stem from chain/tensioning irregularity.
  • Loss of engine performance, rough running, mis-fires, or inconsistent response — because timing drift can affect the engine’s breathing and ignition.
  • High mileage or long service interval without chain replacement — wear accumulates even if symptoms are subtle.
  • Visual inspection (where possible) may show wear or elongation in chain links, damaged guides or tensioner issues.

Why Replacement Matters:
  • Engine protection: A failed or excessively worn timing chain can cause piston-valve contact, or major internal engine damage. Replacing the chain significantly reduces that risk.
  • Maintains timing accuracy: A new chain ensures correct timing events — vital for power delivery, engine smoothness, efficiency and longevity.
  • Noise & NVH improvement: Slack or worn chain components often produce unwanted noise and degrade refinement — renewed parts improve comfort.
  • Cost-efficiency: Since accessing the chain involves significant labour (front engine cover, oil pump, possibly other removal), replacing the chain while you’re already in saves repeated work.

The timing chain links the crankshaft drive to the camshaft drive system, keeping the camshafts synchronised with the crankshaft. Correct timing allows the engine valves to open and close at the right moment, supporting smooth running, correct combustion, and dependable engine performance.

Functions
•  Drives the camshaft timing system
•  Helps keep crankshaft and camshaft timing synchronised
•  Supports correct valve opening and closing timing
•  Helps maintain smooth engine running and performance
•  Replaces stretched, noisy, worn, or damaged timing chains
•  Supports reliable valve train operation
•  OE Match replacement for engine timing repair or rebuild work.

Why Replace This Part?
Timing chains are exposed to constant load, heat, oil, and high-speed engine operation. Over time, a chain can stretch, wear, become noisy, or affect accurate camshaft timing. A worn timing chain may cause rattling noises, poor running, timing deviation faults, reduced performance, or potential engine damage if left unresolved. Replacing the timing chain helps restore accurate timing and long-term engine reliability.

When to Replace This Part
•   The timing chain is stretched, worn, noisy, or damaged
•   There is rattling from the timing chain area
•   Camshaft timing deviation faults are present
•   The engine has poor running, misfires, or reduced performance linked to timing issues
•   Chain guides, tensioners, sprockets, or related timing components are being replaced
•   The engine is being rebuilt or overhauled
•   Preventative replacement is being carried out during major engine service.

Where it fits on the car
This timing chain fits inside the engine timing chain system on Porsche 996 and 986 Boxster models. It forms part of the camshaft drive arrangement and should be installed according to the factory timing layout and engine specification.

Engine timing chain. CLOSED TYPE.
OE Match replacement engine timing chain - also referred to as the camshaft/intermediate shaft timing chain - designed to replicate the original Porsche timing chain used in the engine timing drive system of early 911 (996) and Boxster engines.
2 per engine. Sold each.

Fits:
Porsche 996 3.4L C2/C4 1998 - 2001
Porsche 986 Boxster 1997 - 2004

Diagram Ref No 26.

The timing chain ensures precise mechanical synchronization between critical rotating components of the engine - primarily the crankshaft and camshafts (and in some layouts, the intermediate shaft). It maintains the correct timing of valve opening and closing events relative to piston position, which is vital for efficient combustion, smooth engine operation, and proper power delivery.

Function:
Synchronises rotation of the crankshaft and camshafts
Maintains correct valve timing for intake and exhaust events
Transfers mechanical drive through intermediate gears/shafts
Supports reliable engine performance and emissions control.

A worn or elongated timing chain can cause timing errors, engine noise, rough running, or in more severe cases, engine damage if the timing relationship is lost.

The timing chain is a critical engine component. Over long service intervals and high mileage, the chain can stretch or wear, leading to slack, improper timing, and noisy operation. If not addressed, timing chain issues can cause:
  Engine noise (chain rattle)
  Poor idle and power delivery
  Timing inaccuracies affecting combustion
Potential engine damage if timing is lost.

Replacing worn chains with an OE Match unit helps ensure accurate timing, preserves engine performance, and protects other internal engine components.

When to replace. Replace the timing chain when:
There is rattling or slapping noise from the timing cover area
Timing chain slack is detected in inspection
You are performing an engine rebuild or overhaul
Timing tensioner or guides show wear
Irregular idle or misfires suggest timing drift

About Chains & Tensioners

Precision Timing Chains & Tensioners – Engine Synchronisation and Reliability for Porsche Models

The timing chain system is one of the most critical components of a Porsche engine, ensuring perfect synchronisation between the crankshaft and camshafts. This precise coordination allows valves to open and close at the right moment, maintaining smooth power delivery, fuel efficiency, and long-term engine health.

At Design911, we supply a comprehensive range of precision-engineered timing chains, guides, and hydraulic tensioners designed to meet or exceed manufacturer performance standards. Each component is manufactured from high-strength materials for exceptional wear resistance and durability — vital for high-revving, performance-oriented Porsche engines.

What Do Timing Chains and Tensioners Do?

A timing chain connects the crankshaft to the camshafts, ensuring accurate valve timing. The tensioner keeps the chain taut to prevent slack, vibration, or noise, maintaining precise timing under all load conditions.

Core Functions:

  • Synchronise engine timing between the camshaft and crankshaft.
  • Maintain valve timing accuracy for optimal combustion and power.
  • Prevent chain slack and noise through hydraulic or spring-loaded tensioning.
  • Ensure long-term reliability in both performance and everyday driving.

Together, these components preserve the exacting standards of Porsche engine operation — vital for both power and longevity.

Why Do Timing Chains and Tensioners Fail?

Over time, wear, oil degradation, and heat cycles can cause timing components to deteriorate. When neglected, they may stretch, seize, or lose tension — leading to severe engine damage.

Common Causes of Failure Include:

  • Chain stretch or elongation, resulting in timing misalignment.
  • Worn or leaking hydraulic tensioners, causing chain rattle on start-up.
  • Contaminated or degraded engine oil, accelerating wear.
  • Broken chain guides from heat stress or material fatigue.
  • Insufficient oil pressure, reducing hydraulic tensioner performance.

A failing timing chain system can lead to poor performance, rough idling, check-engine lights, or — in extreme cases — catastrophic valve-to-piston contact.

Why Replace with Performance-Grade Timing Components?

Replacing aging timing components with manufacturer-quality parts ensures reliable valve timing, smoother operation, and peace of mind.

Key Benefits:

  • Restores precise valve timing for peak performance and efficiency.
  • Prevents engine noise and vibration caused by chain slack.
  • Protects against catastrophic engine damage due to chain failure.
  • Constructed from heat-treated, high-grade steel for long service life.
  • Engineered to match original timing profiles for Porsche engines.
  • Perfect fitment for classic air-cooled and modern water-cooled models.

Whether performing preventive maintenance or a complete rebuild, these timing chains and tensioners deliver race-ready reliability with road-tested durability.

Highlights:

  • Precision-engineered timing chains, guides, and tensioners for Porsche engines.
  • Restores timing accuracy and eliminates start-up rattle or misfire issues.
  • Built from heat-treated alloy steel for maximum longevity.
  • Hydraulic and mechanical tensioners available for various Porsche models.
  • Ideal for performance rebuilds and preventative maintenance.
  • Compatible with air-cooled and water-cooled Porsche engines.
