Fabspeed Competition Race Exhaust System.

The Fabspeed Spec Boxster Competition Race Exhaust System is a lightweight, high-flow exhaust package developed specifically for 1997–1999 Porsche 986 Boxster and Boxster S track and competition applications.

Fits:

  • Porsche Boxster 986 2.5L 1997-99
  • Porsche Boxster 986 2.7L 1999
  • Porsche Boxster S 986 3.2L 1999

Designed with maximum exhaust flow, weight reduction and performance in mind, the system replaces the restrictive factory exhaust and catalytic-converter arrangement with a much freer-flowing race configuration.

Fabspeed manufactures the system from 14–16 gauge CNC mandrel-bent T304 stainless steel, providing excellent resistance to exhaust heat, corrosion and repeated track-day thermal cycling.

The system also includes turn-down exhaust tips, designed to help direct sound toward the ground and assist with track noise-limit compliance.

Fabspeed currently publishes performance figures of approximately:

  • +15 hp
  • +14 lb-ft of torque
  • 36 lb / 16.4 kg weight reduction

Actual performance will vary according to vehicle condition, engine specification, fuel and testing conditions.

What This Product Does:
The factory exhaust system must balance noise, emissions, refinement and performance.

For a dedicated competition car, these compromises can create unnecessary weight and exhaust restriction.

The Fabspeed Spec Boxster Competition system is designed to:

  • Maximise exhaust gas flow
  • Reduce backpressure
  • Improve throttle response
  • Increase horsepower and torque
  • Reduce rear vehicle weight
  • Produce a much more aggressive race exhaust note
  • Remove the restrictive factory catalytic converters
  • Provide a lightweight track-focused exhaust layout
  • Direct exhaust sound downward through turn-down tips
  • Replace the full OEM exhaust with a competition-oriented system

This system is specifically intended for race and track use, rather than normal road driving.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:
The factory 986 exhaust system is now several decades old on early cars and can deteriorate through heat, condensation, corrosion and vibration.

Common symptoms include:

  • Rust or corrosion on exhaust pipes and silencers
  • Cracked welds
  • Blowing or hissing noises
  • Black soot around leaking joints
  • Internal muffler rattles
  • Loose internal baffles
  • Catalyst rattling
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Restricted high-RPM response
  • Excessive exhaust heat
  • Loose clamps or brackets
  • Damaged exhaust hangers
  • Dented or distorted pipework
  • Exhaust fumes around the rear of the vehicle
  • Poor exhaust-tip alignment
  • Check Engine Light caused by catalyst-related faults

Rattling or reduced performance may also be caused by heat shields, oxygen sensors or other engine-management issues, so proper diagnosis is recommended.

Why Replacement Matters:
A deteriorated exhaust system can affect both performance and reliability.

Cracked or leaking exhaust components can allow extremely hot gases to escape near surrounding parts.

Restricted or internally damaged catalytic converters can also increase exhaust backpressure.

Continued operation with a failing exhaust can contribute to:

  • Reduced engine performance
  • Poor throttle response
  • Excessive exhaust heat
  • Unwanted noise and rattling
  • Exhaust fumes escaping before the intended outlet
  • Heat exposure to nearby components
  • Additional stress on exhaust mounts and joints

Replacing damaged components restores secure exhaust routing and correct exhaust flow.

For a healthy standard car, the Fabspeed Competition system is primarily a race-performance and weight-reduction upgrade.

Porsche 986 Boxster 2000-2004 SOUL Competition Exhaust Package

The SOUL 986 Competition Exhaust Package upgrades the restrictive factory system with a precision-engineered header and exhaust setup, boosting power while delivering an aggressive yet refined Porsche sound.

•  Compatible with all Porsche 986 Boxster models (2000–2004)
•  Backed by SOUL Performance Products’ Lifetime Warranty for both street and track use

DEVELOPMENT:

The Porsche 986 Boxster is a fantastic sports car with huge potential, but its factory exhaust is overly restrictive. Stock headers use oversized catalytic converters, thin flanges, and crushed primary tubing that hold back performance, while the OEM exhaust adds a second set of converters that further reduce power. The SOUL 986 Competition Exhaust Package eliminates these weak points with a complete header and cat-back system engineered to work together. Designed to maximize performance and sound, the system delivers excitement without unwanted drone—SOUL mufflers keep things reserved at partial throttle, even when paired with catless headers. No valves are needed, making it the perfect choice for drivers who want raw performance and a bold exhaust note on demand, yet comfortable refinement around town.

CONSTRUCTION:
Our headers are precision-engineered and crafted from durable T304L stainless steel, featuring port-matched flanges, smooth-radius primary tubing, and optimized collectors for maximum exhaust flow and power gains. Each system is mandrel-bent from T304L stainless steel and paired with mufflers reinforced for long-term durability. Custom brackets and clamps are supplied for a secure installation on your Boxster. To finish the look, select from a range of 321 stainless steel exhaust tips in various styles and finishes—or work with us to create a fully customized set.

BOLT ON AND GO:
Every exhaust component undergoes strict quality checks and is fixture-tested to guarantee perfect fitment. Each system is foam-packed for safe delivery and comes with new high-grade hardware for the header-to-exhaust flanges. Comprehensive installation instructions are provided in the box—see the notes at the bottom of the page for details.

CHECK ENGINE LIGHT?:
This product may trigger a check engine light due to removal of factory catalytic converters. O2 Spacers are available to reduce any chances of triggering a CEL. We suggest a custom ECU tune to disable any check engine lights (for track use only).

About All Silencers / Mufflers

Standard Exhaust Systems – Engineered for Performance, Sound & Longevity

A standard exhaust system is essential for your Porsche’s performance, efficiency, and sound. It controls the flow of exhaust gases from the engine, reduces emissions, manages noise levels, and ensures balanced back pressure for optimal power delivery.

At Design911, we supply standard exhaust systems built from high-grade stainless steel and corrosion-resistant materials. Designed to meet or exceed manufacturer performance standards, these systems deliver the perfect blend of durability, refinement, and performance — ideal for both daily driving and restoration projects.

Each exhaust system is developed to ensure precise fitment, excellent gas flow, and an authentic Porsche exhaust note that retains the car’s original character.

What Do Standard Exhaust Systems Do?

A standard exhaust system performs several vital roles that keep your Porsche running efficiently, cleanly, and safely.

Core Functions:

  • Directs exhaust gases safely away from the engine.
  • Reduces emissions through catalytic converters and silencers.
  • Controls back pressure for balanced performance and fuel efficiency.
  • Minimises engine noise while preserving Porsche’s signature tone.
  • Aids temperature regulation and exhaust scavenging.

A properly maintained exhaust system ensures smooth performance, reduced fuel consumption, and compliance with emissions regulations.

Why Do Exhaust Systems Fail?

Exhaust systems are constantly exposed to heat, moisture, and corrosive gases — all of which take a toll over time.

Common Causes of Failure Include:

  • Corrosion and rust from road salt, condensation, and moisture.
  • Cracked welds or pipes due to vibration and thermal cycling.
  • Internal baffle damage causing rattling or loss of silencing effect.
  • Blocked or leaking joints leading to reduced performance and increased noise.
  • Burnt-out catalytic converters or mufflers reducing efficiency.

Signs of exhaust failure include loud noises, rattling, exhaust odours, or reduced engine performance — all clear indicators that replacement is required.

Why Replace Standard Exhaust Components?

Replacing a worn or damaged exhaust system restores performance, comfort, and efficiency while maintaining your Porsche’s distinctive exhaust tone.

Key Benefits:

  • Restores proper exhaust flow and back pressure.
  • Improves fuel efficiency and power output.
  • Reduces noise and vibration.
  • Ensures emissions compliance and MOT readiness.
  • Built from corrosion-resistant stainless steel for longevity.
  • Direct-fit compatibility for classic and modern Porsche models.

Upgrading to a high-quality standard exhaust preserves the car’s original performance characteristics while ensuring long-lasting reliability.

Highlights:

  • Precision-engineered exhaust systems for Porsche vehicles.
  • Optimised gas flow for power, torque, and efficiency.
  • Durable stainless-steel construction for corrosion resistance.
  • Designed for authentic tone and perfect fitment.
  • Suitable for classic restoration and modern maintenance.
  • Reliable, quiet, and performance-balanced solutions.
