Mounted at the front of the crankshaft, the pulley dampener performs two important functions: it provides the drive interface for the engine's auxiliary belt system while also helping absorb and control torsional vibrations generated by the rotating crankshaft.

Unlike a conventional solid pulley, a crankshaft dampener typically incorporates a vibration-absorbing element between sections of the assembly.
