Diagram ref no 9

Designed for use on Porsche 986 Boxster, 987 Boxster and Cayman, and 996 Carrera models, the additional spring helps absorb impacts when the suspension approaches the end of its travel. This protects the shock absorber, suspension components and chassis from excessive loads while maintaining ride quality and vehicle control.

Over time, the additional spring can deteriorate due to age, compression cycles, road contamination and exposure to heat and moisture. Replacing worn bump stops is an important part of any suspension overhaul and helps restore factory suspension performance.

What Does the Shock Absorber Additional Spring Do?

The additional spring acts as a progressive cushion during suspension compression.

Its primary functions include:

  • Absorbing extreme suspension loads
  • Preventing metal-to-metal contact
  • Protecting shock absorbers
  • Protecting suspension components
  • Improving ride comfort
  • Maintaining suspension control
  • Supporting chassis protection
  • Reducing impact harshness

It forms an important part of the suspension system, especially during hard cornering, heavy braking or driving over uneven road surfaces.

Why Do Additional Springs Fail?

Additional springs are constantly subjected to compression, environmental exposure and ageing.

Common causes of failure include:

  • Age-related foam deterioration
  • Repeated compression cycles
  • Road dirt contamination
  • Water ingress
  • Heat exposure
  • UV degradation
  • Physical damage during suspension servicing
  • General wear and tear

Over time the material can crack, crumble, compress permanently or disintegrate completely.

Symptoms of a Worn Additional Spring

Common signs of failure include:

  • Visible cracking or splitting
  • Missing sections of foam material
  • Deteriorated or crumbling bump stops
  • Increased suspension harshness
  • Knocking noises over bumps
  • Reduced ride quality
  • Suspension bottoming out
  • Uneven suspension behaviour

Many worn bump stops are only discovered during shock absorber replacement or suspension inspections.

When Should the Additional Spring Be Replaced?

Replacement is recommended when:

  • Installing new shock absorbers
  • Carrying out suspension refurbishment
  • The spring shows visible deterioration
  • Suspension noises are present
  • Ride quality has deteriorated
  • The vehicle has covered high mileage
  • Performing preventative maintenance
  • Completing a Porsche restoration project

Most suspension specialists recommend replacing bump stops whenever dampers are renewed.

Why Replacement Matters

A worn or damaged additional spring can reduce suspension protection and negatively affect ride quality.

Benefits of replacement include:

  • Improved suspension performance
  • Better ride comfort
  • Enhanced shock absorber protection
  • Reduced suspension noise
  • Improved vehicle control
  • Prevention of suspension damage
  • Restoration of factory ride characteristics
  • Improved long-term reliability

Replacing this inexpensive component during suspension maintenance can significantly improve overall suspension performance.

Position on Vehicle: Rear suspension, installed within or adjacent to the shock absorber/strut assembly on the rear axle - acts as secondary support (helper spring) or as bump stop to cushion full compression of the suspension.

Applications: Ideal when your rear suspension exhibits signs of bottoming, excessive squat under load, or the helper-spring/bump stop is missing, fatigued or deformed - improving ride quality, maintaining correct ride height, and preserving handling performance.

The helper spring / bump stop is a critical yet often overlooked component of the rear suspension system. It steps in under heavier loads, sharp compressions or lowered ride-height scenarios to prevent suspension harsh-bottoming, maintain ride height and preserve handling geometry. When the part is worn or missing, you may experience a harsh “clunk” on full compression, inconsistent ride height, rear suspension instability or accelerated wear of other suspension components. Replacing it restores correct support, prolongs suspension life and ensures your car handles the way it was engineered.

When and why to replace:
Rear suspension bottoms out prematurely under moderate load or when cornering.
Noticeable change in ride height, rear sagging or uneven posture under load.
After replacement of rear shock absorbers or other suspension components where the helper spring/bump stop may have been removed or reused.
High-mileage vehicle where the original component may have degraded or compressed with age.
If you have lowered or modified your suspension and want to ensure secondary support matches the rest of the system.

Why are important / when to replace

Correct ride height & geometry: Porsche marks springs with tolerance codes; the correct compensating plate thickness is used to achieve the intended static height and suspension geometry. Using the wrong thickness (or missing the plate) can shift ride height by a few millimeters and slightly alter camber/handling.

Proper spring seating: the plate centers and supports the spring top so the spring doesn’t “walk” or sit unevenly on the top mount — missing/damaged plates can allow the spring to sit off-centre and introduce noise or uneven wear.

During any strut/spring/top-mount job: always inspect/replace these plates when you disassemble the strut. They’re inexpensive and commonly replaced as part of a suspension refresh.

Common issues and symptoms

Clunking or popping noises over bumps or in turns if the spring isn’t seating properly (plate missing, crushed, corroded or installed with wrong orientation).

Incorrect ride height / slight handling changes if the wrong thickness is used (3.0 mm vs 6.5 mm can change static height and the intended spring preload/stack). Enthusiast threads explicitly call out these two thicknesses and their effect.

Corrosion / physical damage: over time OE plates can corrode or get deformed during disassembly — they’re cheap and often replaced because removal can damage them.

About Suspension & Axle

Porsche Suspension & Axle Parts

Porsche suspension systems are engineered with precision to deliver sharp handling, ride comfort, and maximum performance. Whether on the road or track, your Porsche relies on a finely tuned suspension and axle setup to keep you in control. When components wear out, the ride becomes rough, handling suffers, and safety can be compromised.

At Design911, we supply a full range of suspension and axle parts for classic and modern Porsche models — from shock absorbers and coil springs to control arms and ball joints - helping you maintain your car’s legendary driving dynamics.

Signs of Worn Shocks or Struts

Shock absorbers and struts are essential for keeping your Porsche stable over bumps and through corners. Some signs they may need replacement include:

  • Excessive Bouncing – car continues to bounce after hitting bumps
  • Poor Cornering Stability – leaning hard into corners, reduced grip
  • Fluid Leaks – damp or oily patches on shocks/struts
  • Uneven Tyre Wear – poor damping leads to increased tyre wear

If left unchecked, worn shocks or struts not only reduce ride comfort but can also compromise safety.

 Common Porsche Suspension Issues

Different Porsche models can face specific suspension-related faults. The most frequent include:

  • Lower Track Control Arm Bushings - Failure causes squeaking noises, uneven tyre wear, and eventually knocking sounds over rough roads.
  • Broken Coil Springs - Seen in models such as the Porsche Boxster. Symptoms include groaning noises when steering and clicking or knocking over bumpy surfaces.
  • Leaking or Worn Shock Absorbers - Identified by damp, oily residue on the shock body. This is one of the most common suspension failures over time.
  • Ball Joint Wear - Worn joints reduce steering precision and can lead to loss of control if ignored.

Fortunately, most of these issues can be resolved by simply replacing the affected parts with OEM or high-quality aftermarket components.
