Timing Chain.

Timing chains operate continuously whenever the engine is running. Although designed for long service life, repeated mechanical loading, friction, heat and lubrication conditions can gradually cause wear to the chain pins, links and contact surfaces. Timing-chain guides, tensioners and sprockets may also deteriorate over time.

As wear increases, the effective length of the chain can increase, resulting in excessive slack, abnormal mechanical noise and potentially inaccurate engine timing. Severe deterioration can increase the risk of the chain jumping, derailing or failing.

The Timing Chain transfers mechanical rotation through the engine timing system while maintaining the required synchronisation between associated timing components.
