Timing Chain.
The IWIS Timing Chain is a replacement internal engine timing component for compatible Porsche applications. Designed to operate as part of the engine's mechanical timing drive, the chain transfers rotational movement between associated timing components while maintaining the precise mechanical relationship required for correct engine operation.

Fits:
  • Porsche 996 GT3 MKI 1999-02
  • Porsche 996 GT3 MKII 2003>>
  • Porsche 996 GT3 RS 2003-04
  • Porsche 997 MK1 GT3 / GT3 RS 2007-09

Timing chains are designed for extended service life, but they are still subject to continuous mechanical loading, friction and heat. Wear can gradually develop at the chain pins, links and contact surfaces, while associated guides, tensioners and sprockets can also deteriorate.

Excessive chain wear or elongation can create additional slack, abnormal mechanical noise and inaccurate engine timing. If a severely worn chain jumps, derails or fails, significant internal engine damage may result.

What This Product Does:
The timing chain forms part of the mechanical system responsible for keeping critical engine components correctly synchronised.

Its primary role is to transfer rotational drive while maintaining the required timing relationship between associated components.

Depending on the engine's timing-system design, this helps support:

  • Accurate engine timing
  • Correct camshaft operation
  • Correct valve timing
  • Reliable mechanical synchronisation
  • Consistent rotational drive
  • Smooth engine operation
  • Stable combustion
  • Predictable power delivery

Correct chain tension and accurate engagement with the associated sprockets are essential for reliable timing-system operation.

Symptoms Of Wear Or Failure:

  • Possible symptoms of timing-chain or related timing-system wear include:
  • Metallic rattling or clattering
  • Timing-chain noise during cold starts
  • Rattle immediately after starting
  • Excessive chain slack
  • Timing-chain elongation
  • Mechanical noise at idle
  • Noise that changes with engine RPM
  • Rough or irregular engine operation
  • Unstable idle
  • Difficult starting
  • Reduced engine performance
  • Engine warning light
  • Timing-related diagnostic fault codes
  • Crankshaft/camshaft correlation faults where applicable
  • MisfiresVisible chain wear during inspection
  • Damaged or excessively worn chain guides
  • Abnormal sprocket wearMetal or plastic debris in the engine oil or filter

These symptoms are not exclusive to the chain itself. Guides, tensioners, sprockets, lubrication problems and other engine faults can produce similar symptoms, so correct diagnosis is essential.

Why Replacement Matters:
The timing chain is a critical internal engine component.

Replacing a confirmed worn, elongated or damaged IWIS Timing Chain can help:

  • Restore dependable timing-system operation
  • Maintain accurate mechanical synchronisation
  • Restore correct timing-chain tension
  • Reduce excessive chain movement
  • Reduce abnormal timing-chain noise
  • Maintain reliable sprocket engagement
  • Protect associated chain guides
  • Protect timing sprockets
  • Reduce the risk of timing deviation
  • Reduce the risk of the chain jumping or derailing
  • Support smooth engine operation
  • Protect expensive internal engine components

Continuing to operate an engine with a confirmed timing-chain problem can allow wear to progress and increase the likelihood of a substantially more expensive repair.
